Position Summary
The Director of Construction will play a critical leadership role in overseeing and managing the entire fiber construction process, including planning, budgeting, scheduling, and execution for their territory. This position will be responsible for ensuring the timely and cost-effective deployment of fiber infrastructure while maintaining quality standards. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in managing large-scale fiber construction projects, vendor management, and cross-functional collaboration.
Director, Construction Critical responsibilities:
- Provide strategic direction and leadership for the fiber construction team, ensuring the timely and successful deployment of fiber optic networks.
- Create and implement construction processes and best practices to streamline fiber build projects.
- Oversee and mentor internal and external teams to meet company objectives and deadlines.
- Develop and maintain detailed construction schedules, ensuring that deadlines are met and projects are completed within budget.
- Monitor construction progress, resolving any issues that arise to avoid project delays and cost overruns.
- Ensure proper documentation and reporting of project milestones, permitting, safety standards, and other regulatory requirements.
- Lead the development and management of the construction budget, ensuring efficient use of resources and adherence to financial goals.
- Approve and track expenses, identify areas for cost optimization, and ensure profitability on all construction projects.
- Forecast and allocate resources appropriately to meet budgetary requirements and avoid overages.
- Identify, vet, and manage relationships with external contractors and vendors for both aerial and underground fiber construction.
- Monitor the performance of vendors and contractors to ensure they meet project specifications, safety standards, and timelines.
- Conduct regular site visits to monitor the quality of work, ensuring adherence to engineering specifications and industry best practices.
- Collaborate closely with engineering, operations, and customer service teams to ensure seamless execution of fiber build-outs and to address any operational challenges.
- Provide regular status updates to senior leadership on project timelines, costs, and risks.
- Ensure coordination between construction teams and network operations for successful service activation
Qualifications of a strong candidate:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Project Management, Business Administration, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- 10 years of experience in fiber construction, with at least 5 years in a leadership role overseeing both aerial and underground fiber builds.
- Proven track record of managing large-scale, complex construction projects within the telecommunications or broadband industry.
- Extensive experience in managing vendor relationships, including negotiating contracts and managing third-party performance.
- Strong understanding of fiber optic construction processes, including planning, scheduling, cost management, and regulatory compliance.
- Exceptional leadership and team management skills, with a proven ability to build and develop high-performing teams.
- Strong financial acumen with the ability to manage large project budgets and optimize resource allocation.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information to senior leadership and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to travel as required to oversee construction projects in multiple locations.
