Position Summary:
The Transit Security Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of passengers, employees, and transit infrastructure within King County’s public transportation system. This role involves proactive patrols, incident response, enforcement of transit policies, and collaboration with law enforcement and transit personnel to maintain a safe and orderly environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Security & Safety Operations
- Conduct routine foot and mobile patrols across transit stations, platforms, buses, and park-and-ride facilities.
- Monitor and respond to security incidents, disturbances, and unauthorized activities in transit areas.
- Enforce transit agency rules, codes of conduct, and trespassing regulations in coordination with local authorities.
- Assist in emergency evacuations, crisis management, and disaster response efforts.
- Provide crowd control during peak hours, special events, and high-traffic periods.
Customer Service & Public Engagement
- Serve as a visible and approachable security presence to deter criminal activity and enhance passenger confidence.
- Assist riders with wayfinding, transit schedules, and general inquiries while maintaining a professional and service-oriented demeanor.
- Mediate conflicts and de-escalate tense situations using verbal intervention techniques.
- Address concerns from passengers and transit personnel, ensuring timely resolution of security-related issues.
Incident Response & Reporting
- Respond to incidents involving theft, vandalism, trespassing, fare evasion, and public disturbances.
- Prepare detailed and accurate incident reports, witness statements, and security logs.
- Utilize surveillance and communication equipment to monitor activities and report suspicious behavior.
- Work closely with law enforcement, transit staff, and emergency responders to coordinate responses to security threats.
Policy Compliance & Risk Mitigation
- Adhere to all King County Metro security policies, transit regulations, and standard operating procedures.
- Identify and mitigate potential security risks in transit environments through proactive security assessments.
- Conduct safety inspections and report maintenance or safety hazards affecting transit operations.
Qualifications & Requirements:Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum of 2 years of security, law enforcement, military, or transit safety experience.
- Washington State Security Guard License (or ability to obtain upon hire).
- Valid Washington State driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in high-stress situations.
- Ability to pass a Pre-Employment drug screen (Including Cannabis)
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in transit security, transportation safety, or a high-visibility security role.
- Training in de-escalation, crisis intervention, or trauma-informed response.
- Knowledge of local and state transit laws, policies, and enforcement procedures.
- Familiarity with surveillance systems, access control, and radio communication protocols.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements:
- Must be able to stand, walk, and patrol for extended periods in all weather conditions.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and respond quickly to emergencies.
- Work may involve exposure to unpredictable situations, including interactions with individuals experiencing mental health crises or substance abuse issues.
- Availability for flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
