Job Title: Upper School Dance Teacher
Job Description
The Upper School Dance Teacher is responsible for planning, choreographing, and teaching a variety of dance styles to high school students. This role includes preparing students for two semester-end showcases and working collaboratively with the Fine Arts faculty, the Early Childhood and Lower School Dance and Ballet Teacher, and the Upper School Division Head. The ideal candidate will bring energy, creativity, and a passion for dance education to a student-centered program. This is a part time position. Classes run 3 times a week for an hour and a half from 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM.
Job Responsibilities
- Relate well to high school students and support their growth as both dancers and individuals.
- Develop and implement lesson plans that align with instructional goals and support students at a range of experience levels.
- Create a learning environment that emphasizes skill development, artistic expression, and confidence.
- Choreograph solo and group works for two Upper School dance showcases per academic year.
- Maintain a safe, inclusive, and positive studio/classroom environment.
- Assess individual student strengths and areas for growth, providing regular feedback.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with students and parents about course content, expectations, and student progress.
- Participate in parent conferences and student check-ins as needed.
- Collaborate with other arts faculty and contribute to interdisciplinary projects when appropriate.
- Serve on school committees and participate in broader school life.
- Stay current on trends and best practices in dance education and adolescent development.
- Engage in ongoing professional development and curriculum refinement.
- Uphold school rules and policies with consistency and compassion.
- Work closely with Middle School Dance to align curriculum and continue growth of the program from Middle School to Upper School.
- Attend ISAS and performance opportunities as assigned.
Qualifications:
- BFA in Dance or related field required; advanced degree preferred.
- Strong background and instructional ability in ballet, jazz, contemporary, and lyrical dance.
- Experience teaching Upper School (grades 9–12) students in a school setting.
- Passion for working with high school-aged students and supporting their artistic and personal development.
- Skilled in creating a dynamic and engaging classroom/studio environment.
- Strong organizational, communication, and classroom management skills.
- Flexibility, creativity, and the ability to work collaboratively with a team.
- Ability to perform and demonstrate physical dance movements and maintain an active presence in the classroom.
