Assistant Professor, Early Childhood Studies

This is a full-time, 175-day (10-month annual contract) tenure-track faculty position in the Applied Behavioral Sciences Department, which hosts the Early Childhood Studies (ECS) academic program. The faculty member will be responsible for the following:  providing instruction in assigned classes under supervision of the assigned Dean of Academic Affairs; supporting students in course progress and program completion of educational and vocational goals; assessing student and program learning outcomes; participating in articulation and curriculum development and review, maintaining currency and relevancy in assigned discipline specifically prenatal through third grade; utilizing current technology in performing employment responsibilities; engaging in college service by participating in faculty governance including accreditation and faculty councils and committees; fulfilling other duties and responsibilities of a full-time faculty member.

This teaching assignment may include instruction in various modalities and occur on evenings and weekends at any college site or campus.

  • Possess a deep understanding of child development theories, workforce needs, and comprehensive curricular knowledge.
  • Apply current pedagogical theories and practices in the academic classroom. 
  • Ability to create engaging curriculum.
  • Commitment to staying current and relevant with research and best practices in early childhood studies and education.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, county, and local standards, regulations, and initiatives relevant to workforce and working children and families.
  • Able to communicate effectively professionally and positively within a diverse community of learners. 
  • Work collaboratively with a dynamic team of professionals.
  • Develop, organize, and manage systems to support the needs and functions of the Early Childhood Studies Academic Program.
  • Engage students in instruction that supports diverse learning styles while providing opportunities for meaningful feedback and application of knowledge. 

Demonstrated experience in:

  • Experience teaching in higher education; California Community College is desired.
  • Experience with andragogy in a wide variety of child development topics.
  • Working collaboratively with a higher education academic learning laboratory early care and education program.
  • Researching data-based curriculum and program development.
  • Applying evaluation and assessment methods that lead to program improvements.
  • Delivering instruction in multiple modalities, including in-person, as well as hybrid and online formats to support the academic success of diverse student populations
  • Working in a vocational career and technical education program.
  • Innovative teaching strategies that encourage critical thinking, engagement, and student success.
  • Working collaboratively across disciplines to create integrated approaches to early childhood studies and education.  
  • Teaching dual enrollment courses providing high-quality education to high school students outside of the bell schedule desired.
  • Experience working in the industry desired.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others and work with minimum supervision.

Demonstrated ability to:

  • Communicate effectively, both in oral and written communication.
  • Build relationships, interact positively with others, and manage conflict.
  • Collaborate effectively with others, support colleagues, and contribute to shared goals.
  • Analyze information, evaluate options, and make sound judgments.
  • Identify issues, develope solutions, and implement strategies to reduce barriers.
  • Prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and manage workload with efficiency.
  • Inspire and guide others, demonstrate professional characteristics of and ethical early childhood educator.
  • Display professional standards, ethics, and competencies in the discipline.

Master’s in child development, early childhood education, human development, home economics/ family and consumer studies with a specialization in child development/early childhood education or educational psychology with a specialization in child development/early childhood education 

OR 

Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s in social work, educational supervision, elementary education, special education, psychology, bilingual/bicultural education, life management/ home economics, family life studies, or family and consumer studies.  

Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff, community college students, and staff and students with disabilities.

The hiring salary range is $69,030 to $91,651 dependent upon education and experience.
