Chief Financial Officer
The mission of the Allen Institute is to unlock the complexities of bioscience and advance our knowledge to improve human health. The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the Allen Institute will lead a mission-driven finance organization, energized around a milestone-propelled and deliverables-based environment. The CFO will report to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and provide overall strategic and operational direction in areas of finance, budget, treasury, sponsored research, and accounting to support an intelligent and agile organization. The CFO will partner with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and operating unit leaders to establish strategic objectives, providing critical perspective in areas of financial and economic modeling inclusive of financial data, customer/market perspective for Allen Institute data and products, value of Allen Institute information/intellectual capital, internal controls, and investments in information technology and human capital. As a member of the executive leadership team, the CFO will be an advisor to Allen Institutes leadership in an environment of exciting expansion, engaging with the Board of Directors as the Treasurer and its Finance, Risk and Audit Committee.

Key Responsibilities
Financial Modeling:
- Provide strategic financial analysis, modeling, and planning to support collaborative optimization of resource allocation for existing, transitioning, new, and emerging projects and products
- Influence project investment with objective data
- Leverage internal and external partnerships
Economic Modeling:
- Provide sound economic perspective to the CEO, business and scientific unit leaders, functional leaders, and budget owners, to support and influence business decision-making
- Establish visibility of operational cost drivers and financial data
Financial Reporting and Metrics:
- Deliver insightful, transparent, timely, accurate financial reporting to the CEO, board of directors and committees, business unit leaders, functional leaders, and budget holders
- Fully leverage Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) capabilities
- Ensure effective controls and reporting
- Partner with the COO, Chief Technology Officer (CTO), and VP of Innovation to establish value metrics for the Institutes products and information to integrate qualitative and economic perspectives, to further influence optimal business decision-making and product roadmaps
Accounting and Risk Management:
- Maintain well-defined policies for tracking external private and government funding
- Ensure transparent, collaborative internal controls that both minimize risk and empower business units and functional leaders
- Oversee the development and implementation of short- and long-term budgets, and provide projections, forecasts, and analysis of financial impact
- Ensure sound cash stewardship
- Ensure accurate and timely compliance with international, federal, state & local tax requirements and reporting
- Oversee full compliance with rules surrounding government contractors and grant accounting
- Lead the audit process and oversee financial reporting decisions
Leadership:
- Create a culture that inspires a financially intelligent organization that thrives and strives for financial and accounting leadership and partnership in service to our mission, business units and functions
- Maintain a world-class team of subject matter experts who remain current with new and emerging financial/accounting trends, perspectives, and regulations
Research Funding:
- Executive oversight of the Office of Sponsored Research (OSR).
- Strategic management of National Science Foundation (NSF) & National Institute of Health (NIH) relationships
- Reporting to the CFO, the OSR team will ensure regulatory compliance and provide compliance compendium pre and post funding award

Required Education and Experience
- Advanced degree in finance or related field
- 10 years proven financial leadership in best-in-class, milestone-driven organization
- Demonstrated success driving technological advancement and end to end ERP integration
- Reputation for leadership through partnership, teamwork, and collaborative decision-making
- Ability to produce advanced financial strategies supported by financial and economic modeling
- Foundation in operations, procurement and budget processing improvement
Physical Demands
- Fine motor movements in fingers/hands to operate computers and other office equipment
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
- Occasional evening and weekend hours as needed
- This role is currently able to work both remotely and onsite in a hybrid work environment. We are a Washington State employer, and the primary work location for all Allen Institute employees is 615 Westlake Ave N.; any remote work must be performed in Washington State.
Travel
- U.S. and international travel as needed
- Attendance and participation at Institute events and/or conferences as needed

Annualized Salary Range
- $420,000 - $520,000 *
* Final salary depends on required education for the role, experience, and level of skills relevant to the role, along with work location, where applicable.
