- Master's degree in alternative education, education administration, curriculum and instruction, counseling, school psychology, special education or a related field.
- Doctorate in Education preferred.
- Five (5) years or more experience in school or central office administration.
- Demonstrated understanding of current practices and issues related to the development, maintenance, quality assurance, and expansion of alternative education
- Experience with accreditation, credit recovery, and regulatory requirements associated with alternative education.
- Experience analyzing data to improve enrollment, student outcomes, and the design and delivery of alternative learning instruction and programming
- Experience collaborating with multiple stakeholders to solve complex problems effectively and efficiently.
- Experience using Student and Staff Information Systems (e.g., PowerSchool, Skyward, SapphireK12, etc.)
- Satisfactory work record & criminal/ child abuse clearances (Acts 34, 114, and 151)
- Additional or alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board or Superintendent may determine appropriate and acceptable.
- Lead the development, implementation, and review of the alternative education program and instructional innovation plan and ensure its alignment with the Allentown School District (ASD) Strategic Plan.
- Oversee scheduling, enrollment, policies, procedures, and practices in collaboration with ASD leadership, faculty, and other pertinent stakeholders.
- Coordinate and implement instructional design projects from inception to completion.
- Ensure that the alternative education program meets standards set by state and federal regulations, district policies, and accreditation standards.
- Serve as a subject matter expert in the best practices in the design, development, and delivery of large-scale alternative educational programming, teaching, and learning.
- Research, compile, assemble and evaluate a variety of technical information related to the Alternative Education program; participate in the development, implementation, amendments, and evaluation of program(s), plans, and educational documents; prepare and distribute related correspondence and informational materials.
- Coordinates alternative students by providing a student orientation, ongoing success coaching, providing graduation checks to high school students, and leading student recruitment efforts.
- Coordinates special education services for alternative program students by maintaining necessary records, attending IEP meetings, and coordinating with and assisting special education case managers.
- Prepare and maintain a variety of narrative and statistical reports, records, and files related to personnel and assigned activities, as well as student achievement reports; create master schedule(s) and organize standardized testing schedule(s)
- Research, develop, implement and refine pathways for students to achieve graduation success.
- Collaborate with ASD leadership and internal stakeholders to manage the hiring, training, and mentoring of faculty/staff, resolve complaints, and ensure that faculty and student support functions are aligned to promote student success.
- Provide faculty training and professional development that develops faculty instructional competence, supports best practices in alternative education design, development, and delivery.
- Develop and oversee intervention strategies to support at-risk students academically, behaviorally, socially, and emotionally.
- Collaborates with principals to establish safety net programs that maximize opportunities for students to meet grade level expectations and state and ASD standards.
- Develops and coordinates educational programs through meetings with staff, review of teachers' activities, and issuance of directives.
- Supervises program and building discipline; student, faculty, and staff attendance; and class schedules; cumulative records and grade reporting to ensure that all are aligned and in compliance with school district policies and regulations
- Develop strategies to promote positive behavior and conflict resolution skills.
- Collaborates with related departments to establish clear approaches for planning and measuring individual and collective student growth. Operates with the intent of ensuring that every student has an opportunity to go to college, post-secondary schooling and/or is career ready.
- Coordinate with mental health professionals, social workers, and law enforcement when needed.
- Hire, supervise, coordinate, and evaluate ASD staff.
- Maintains a visible presence and communicates effectively in all areas of the department.
- Conducts research to drive productive program initiatives and instruction.
- Collaborates with the Director of Communications to develop and implement marketing and outreach strategy and materials.
- Identify emerging trends and conduct needs analyses that offer opportunities for new programming and service.
- Develop and manage budgets for alternative education programs, including identifying and securing funding sources (e.g. grants), to support program development and initiatives.
- Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as may be assigned or delegated by the Superintendent and/or designee.
