Main Duties and Responsibilities
As a Lead Inspector, the candidate shall be required to work with Project Teams to preform daily field inspections and observations of contractor’s work as well as possess the ability to inspect steel and foundations against Issued for Construction drawings. The candidate must exhibit a comprehensive understanding of welding processes, materials, inspection and testing processes, and inspection of mechanical systems and components in regards to failure analysis, mechanical performance, and compliance to industry standards.
The typical roles and responsibilities of this role shall include:
- Inspect welded joints for compliance with industry standards (e.g., AWS, ASME, API).
- Verify the quality of welding materials (rods, wire, etc.) used in fabrication.
- Conduct visual inspections and apply non-destructive testing (NDT) methods like ultrasonic, radiographic, and magnetic particle testing.
- Review welding procedures and recommend improvements to meet code or quality standards.
- Ensure welders follow proper procedures and safety protocols during welding operations.
- Maintain detailed inspection reports and documentation for compliance with regulatory standards.
- Perform inspections on pressure vessels, piping systems, and structural welds to ensure integrity.
- Inspect products and processes to ensure they meet specified quality standards.
- Perform measurements and tests on raw materials, in-process components, and finished products.
- Utilize quality control tools like statistical process control (SPC), failure mode analysis, and root cause analysis.
- Monitor manufacturing processes to ensure consistency and reduce defects.
- Prepare and review inspection and quality reports, documenting deviations from quality standards.
- Collaborate with engineers to address quality-related issues and implement corrective actions.
- Conduct audits of the quality management system to ensure compliance with standards like ISO 9001.
- Inspect mechanical systems, machinery, and components for conformance to design specifications and codes.
- Perform visual, dimensional, and functional inspections to verify mechanical integrity.
- Review maintenance schedules and inspection procedures for mechanical systems.
- Work closely with maintenance and engineering teams to ensure proper installation, operation, and repair of mechanical systems.
- Identify wear, corrosion, or fatigue in critical mechanical components, and recommend corrective actions.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards and operational reliability during inspections.
- Document all inspections and repairs, ensuring records are complete for future audits.
Experience
Typical experience level for this position is 10 years.
Education
This position requires a high school diploma or GED. Higher level education, degrees, or certifications are considered a benefit.
· Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification is preferred.
· Certified Quality Inspector (CQI) certification is preferred.
· Certified Mechanical Inspector (CMI) certification is preferred.
Requirements
- Minimum Requirements:
o Availability to work the contractor’s hours of operation, including day or night shifts and weekends, as necessary for project completion
o Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel and basic computer and mobile device skills
o Maintain a valid driver's license with a clean motor vehicle report (MVR) for final consideration
o Possess a personal vehicle for use on or around a job site
o Read, write, and understand plans and directions given in the English language
o Basic computer skills with the ability to create and edit Microsoft Word and Excel documents, create Outlook emails and utilize SharePoint and Microsoft Teams to communicate with other team members
- Physical Requirements:
o Able to stand for approximately 3 hours minimum a day up to 8 hours
o Able to traverse a construction job site consisting of uneven ground varying in height and consistency of material, with a variation of elevation 19" or less (mud, gravel, rutted ground, etc.)
o Able to climb and leave a ladder to a platform varying from 6' to 20'
o Able to wear and operate personal fall arresting apparatus, and work at a height of 6' or higher
o Able to wear GPI required PPE, i.e., hard hats, safety vest, work boots, and/or safety glasses/goggles while working
o Able to move equipment or inspection specimens weighing up to 50 pounds
- Other Responsibilities and Requirements:
o Perform daily field inspections and observations of contractor’s work for construction projects, including earthwork, subgrade, asphalt, concrete, reinforcing steel, structural steel, safety devices, and utilities
o Ability to measure, compute, record, and maintain contract quantities for contractor payment
o Perform and/or observe material sampling and testing in accordance with project standards and specifications
o Ensure contractor’s work/materials meet standards and specifications
o Ability to properly document daily project progress, including work performed, conformance/nonconformance with plans/specifications, staffing, equipment, contract quantities, and extra work
o Entering and recording project progress, materials, payments, and documentation in Word/Excel or other electronic software program
o Identifying and communicating project issues to project managers and the contractor
Ability to identify, assess, and communicate unsafe conditions with the contractor
