About the Seattle Teacher Residency:
The Seattle Teacher Residency (STR) is an innovative teacher preparation program that offers aspiring teachers a route to teaching that includes the training necessary to become exceptional educators in Seattle Public Schools. Through a strategic combination of clinical classroom experience in Title 1 SPS elementary schools, an intensive apprenticeship with skilled SPS Mentor Teachers, and master's level coursework at the University of Washington’s College of Education, teacher candidates will earn a Masters in Teaching from the UW College of Education. All STR Residents participate in a yearlong practicum experience in an SPS high-needs school with an (trained and supported) experienced SPS Mentor Teacher.

Position Summary:
The Manager of Recruitment and Retention, reporting to the Deputy Director of the Seattle Teacher Residency Program and working as part of a team of five, will be responsible for attracting, supporting, and retaining a diverse group of prospective teachers. This role is based at the Alliance for Education Office in Downtown Seattle and requires travel around the Seattle area to meet with residents and STR Program Partners.
This position is vital to the STR and AFE’s mission. You will help shape the STR Program recruitment process by developing innovative strategies to meet our goals. Working closely with the Deputy Director and the STR team, you will guide the team in setting recruiting and retention priorities and creating effective future teacher talent sourcing and hiring strategies. You will serve as an ambassador for the AFE mission so that the values of the organization are reflected throughout the teacher candidate’s experience, from recruitment through program completion.
Critical Job Functions:

Recruitment (Prospective Teacher Residency Candidate Advising):
- Work with STR leads, UW COE, SEA, and SPS HR to coordinate recruiting efforts with identified strategies that result in a culturally and linguistically diverse pool of applicants.
- Participate in recruiting and outreach in the community, related conferences, and organizations.
- Collaborate with STR team to lead development of recruitment materials, websites, and social media outreach strategies.
- Drive and lead the implementation of recruitment activities and Identify applicant pools and develop recruitment activities (both locally and nationally) with particular attention those interested in Special Education.
- Establish relationships and communication with UW Education, Communities, Organizations (ECO) instructors and interns; recruitment, selection, and management of UW ECO internship experience as subs w/team assistance as needed.
- Cultivate relationships as well as collaborate and strategize with leadership of SPS Academy of Rising Educators and other partner organizations that represent recruitment channels.
- Facilitate in-person and virtual information sessions for potential applicant including engagement of STR graduates.
- Facilitate the admissions process in collaboration with UW College of Education Student Services.
- Receive, track, and respond to program inquiry questions.
- Collaborate with districts to recruit staff into profession.
- Plan and lead applicant review process and interview events, including coordination of review teams.
- Prepare and manage the data reports associated with the recruitment process including applicant pool.
- Track, monitor, and report on student progress and participation.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Retention (Current Resident Experience-Check-ins):
- Create clear communication plans to keep members warm, informed, and engaged during onboarding/matriculation.
- Organize New Evaluation Series (NES) materials and tutoring and host NES study sessions.
- Connect residents with appropriate UW stakeholders such as Financial Aid, Fiscal, and the Certification Officer.
- Assist with planning of Resident Orientation and June Launch events.
- Advise residents with wellness monitoring and academic advising using multiple advising modalities such as one-on-one, observations, and group meetings or experience check-ins.
- Perform administrative management of advising work (tracking, high touch points).
- Work with Seattle Public School HR Department to support residents in the hiring process.
- Onboard residents into Seattle Public Schools including managing documents, checklists, resume reviews, interview skills.
- Research and communicate wellness or funding opportunities available to students.
Retention (Alumni Advising):
- Advise graduates, as needed, with instructional or classroom support, wellness monitoring and academic advising using multiple advising modalities such as one-on-one, observations, and group meetings.
- Identify and implement coaching strategies that will support teacher of record learning and effectiveness.
- Attend relevant SPS or Consulting Teacher professional development days.
- Support STR team with coordinating alumni activities and communications.
STR Team Membership:
- Collaborate across a variety of stakeholders including university, district, and community partners, as well as National Center for Teacher Residencies (residency network) partners.
- Work with STR Directors on suggested program revisions and collaborate on ongoing program improvement.
- Co‐teach reflective seminars as a space for guest speakers, coaching workshops and academic or instructional support.
AFE Team Membership:
- Serve as a member of the Alliance for Education team, collaborating on broad-based organizational efforts and representing the Alliance for Education in the community.
- Support the creation of an organizational environment oriented to trust, open communication, creativity and teamwork.
- Pro-actively engage in and support organizational and individual work to learn about and advance equality.
- Work cross-departmentally to ensure staff understanding of the work and impact of the Seattle Teacher Residency.
- Work in partnership with all members of the Alliance for Education team to advance the mission of the organization.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Master's degree in education with a focus in Elementary Teaching, Special Education, Literacy Education, or Curriculum and Instruction.
- Over 3 years of teaching and/or administrative experience in K-12 education preferred, with a focus on urban public schools and their challenges.
- Proven success in supervising, mentoring, and developing both novice and veteran teachers.
- Demonstrated ability to identify, navigate, and address challenges associated with equity and inclusion and equity work.
- Has a deep understanding of and the ability to engage with all communities fostering an inclusive and respectful environment.
- Advanced knowledge in Standards-Based Curriculum and elements of effective lesson and unit.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task; ability to balance technical demands and supporting adult learning needs.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure, meet deadlines, and collaborate independently and with teams.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to develop open and collaborative relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Proactively implements approaches, fostering a collaborative and personal environment while seeking solutions to problem-solving.
- Customer-service orientation; ability to build and maintain strong internal and external relationships.
- High attention to detail and ability to maintain a high-level of accuracy under pressure.
- Proficiency in integrating technology into teaching and learning activities. Skilled in MS Office suite, particularly Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel with a strong preference.
Preferred Certificates, Licenses, Registrations (not required):
- Washington State Teaching Certificate
Additional Requirement:
- Access to a reliable form of transportation. Approximately 50% of travel needed to and from schools across the city of Seattle, many of which are not near bus or light rail routes.
Employment Details:
The Chamber and Alliance for Education is committed to internal and market equity. The anticipated pay range for this position is $72,262 - $90,000 annually, based on experience.
