PURPOSE: The material development chemist is responsible for researching, designing, and optimizing the formulations of SMC, BMC and thermoplastic composite materials by carefully selecting resin systems, fillers, additives, and catalysts to achieve desired properties for specific applications, focusing on factors like mechanical strength, heat resistance, dimensional stability, and cost effectiveness.
1.0 DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Formulation Development:
- Design, test, and optimize SMC, BMC and Thermoplastics, PVC, PC formulations to meet performance, cost, and sustainability objectives.
- Select and validate raw materials, including thermosetting resins, fillers, reinforcements, catalysts, and additives.
- Develop advanced composites with improved mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties tailored to industry-specific applications.
- Analyze organic and inorganic compounds to determine chemical and physical properties.
- Develop materials and manufacturing processes that minimize waste and increase the quality of the finished product.
- Process Optimization:
- Collaborate with manufacturing teams, and engineering to ensure formulations are compatible with production processes and machinery.
- Provide technical guidance on material processing, including molding, curing, and finishing steps.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues during production.
- Quality Assurance:
- Establish and maintain quality control standards for SMC, BMC, and thermoplastic materials.
- Analyze product performance through testing and characterization (e.g., rheology, material strength, and thermal stability.
- Innovation and Research:
- Stay updated on advancements in composite materials and industry trends.
- Drive R&D projects to incorporate emerging technologies, such as low-VOC resins or recyclable materials.
- Collaborate with academic institutions and suppliers to explore new opportunities for material innovation.
- Safety Measures:
- Implement safety procedures to limit risk when working with chemicals.
- Follow all company safety guidelines, practices, and procedures.
- Maintain the lab facility and equipment in good working order and to high 5S standards.
- Team Leadership:
- Develop / lead team in the development of the processing parameters of converting raw materials into new products.
- Mentor Quality Technicians in R&D initiatives.
- Foster a collaborative and innovative work environment.
- Manage project timelines, budgets, and deliverables.
- Strategic Planning:
- Collaborate with the management team to develop and execute the company’s strategic plan.
- Regulatory Compliance and Documentation:
- Ensure all formulations comply with relevant environmental, health, and safety regulations.
- Maintain detailed documentation of formulation processes, testing results, and material specifications.

2.0 REQUIRED SKILLS / RESPONSIBILITIES

- Proficient with Microsoft Office Software including Excel, Word and PowerPoint, electronic communication, video conferencing, e-mail, and voice mail
3.0 EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
A bachelor’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or related field required. A master’s degree preferred.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Laboratory experience
- Three (3) to five (5) years field experience with R&D projects that improve factors like mechanical strength, heat resistance, dimensional stability, and cost effectiveness.
- Related work with different materials, specifically:
- Thermosets; SMC, BMC.
- Thermoplastics; PVC, PC.
- Resin systems; including fillers, fibers, additives, and catalysts.
- Ability to work with diverse teams of professionals at all levels.
4.0 PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

5.0 WORK ENVIRONMENT:
