Overview
The Director of Construction will be responsible for the overall safety and operational performance of the division and will develop and manage the implementation of sound business practices and standards for all projects, resulting in lower costs and higher returns for the company. Principle responsibilities include execution of company business plans for the Construction Division, ensuring efficient allocation of company resources, enforcing company policies, monitoring financial performance, identifying areas for savings or improvement, while keeping the Vice President and Executive Management apprised as to Construction performance, and generally promoting an environment conducive to achieving the short term and long-term objectives of the company.
Duties:
General Management Duties and Responsibilities: 60%
- Assists, provides advice to, and educates Construction staff in fulfilling their duties and responsibilities while following company policies and procedures.
- Promotes and enforces a safety-first culture within the Construction Division, ensuring that all employees and subcontractors comply with company safety policies, industry regulations, and best practices.
- Monitors and evaluates personnel performance, ensuring job responsibilities are completed efficiently and in compliance with safety standards, project requirements, and company policies.
- Leads and guides pre-construction and project support staff allocated to the Construction Division in fulfilling their duties and responsibilities while following company policies and procedures to ensure customer satisfaction and profitability.
- Selects and coordinates education and training programs for Construction personnel as needed.
- Leads and provides direction to Construction personnel relating to company contractual guidance and policies.
- Reviews all contracts pertaining to Construction based upon corporate guidelines and take necessary steps to ensure that contracts and policies are understood and consistently followed.
- Provides input and direction on any contractual, financial, or legal issues between company and its customers and suppliers.
- Assists staff in negotiating with contracting parties when required to ensure that company’s rights are protected, and our responsibilities fulfilled.
- Takes all required steps to maximize cost controls and profitability for all projects assigned to Construction.
- Ensures that maximum cash flow efficiency is realized through effective oversight of Construction billings, collections, capital expenditures, general and administrative expenses and all other similar financial issues related to Construction.
- Oversees and implements measures to optimize the efficient and effective use of company resources.
- In coordination with Estimating and Business Development, identifies opportunities and market Company to prospective, new, and existing customers.
- Advises and assigns staff resources to prospective customers and/or projects.
- Actively cultivates relationships with both existing and potential customers.
- Works with Safety to ensure that the Company’s safety policies are adhered to and the safety objectives are met.
- Oversees activity between Construction and Manpower staff and ensures that an adequate, stable, and well-trained electrical field labor force is maintained on projects to meet customer needs and company performance obligations.
- Provides required information to staff members concerning Construction activities on a regular basis to allow effective coordination between department staff.
- Distributes corporate information as it is received to direct reports in a timely basis.
- Conducts annual performance reviews with all direct reports in accordance with company policies.
- Works with purchasing to maintain and grow vendor relationships that enhance and protect the company’s position, while adhering to current legal standards and following company policies.
- Communicates key information regularly concerning Construction operations to the Vice President and other Executive level managers to allow all parties to have a full understanding of overall Construction operations from a risk, safety, and financial perspective.
- Initiates requests and makes approval recommendations for all major capital expenditures to the Vice President as needed to maximize Construction operational performance.
Strategic Development Responsibilities: 30%
- Assists Vice President in developing the strategic plan for the division and insure its implementation.
- Works with Business Development to identify new opportunities that fit the strategic plan and develop a plan to champion and win the work associated with the opportunity.
- Ensures the division is meeting profit goals through proper project selection and delivery.

- Performs additional tasks and/or accepts other related responsibilities, as assigned by the Vice President or other Executive Managers which is logically inherent to this position.
Education and Experience:
- A Minimum five (5) years’ experience in an overhead management position to include Estimating and / or Project Management.
- A minimum of 5 years of estimating experience.
Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to effectively interact with internal and external customers.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Knowledge of and experience in the preparation of overall project schedules and lookahead schedules.
- Knowledge of the National Electrical Code and other related engineering standards and codes.
- Proficient computer skills with all basic office programs (Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook) and the ability to learn and use related software and systems are required. Advanced computer skills are a plus.
