Attorney for Insurance Company Legal Defense Department - Hybrid

American Freedom Insurance Company is looking for an experienced counselor to share good judgment in the handling of legal and significant claim files as we expand into our fifth state. This position is Hybrid and the office is based in Mount Prospect, IL.
Responsibilities:
- Expeditious coverage and exposure determination, early communication and appropriate handling of problematic claims is of the highest priority and is highly valued
- Negotiate favorable settlements with law firms and individuals on a variety of complex and noncomplex assigned auto files in the pre-litigation or early litigation stages, primarily third-party
- Collaborate with legal staff, outside counsel and other appropriate parties on evaluations, the mitigation of risk and in the handling of auto claims across many states
- Develop comprehensive independent evaluations, determine effective defense strategies and identify high priority cases and keep on a close diary
- Respond adeptly to demand letters, draft coverage positions and compose other pertinent correspondence on assigned cases
- Identify potential Extra Contractual Obligation and Bad Faith exposures before they become problematic, communicate them to senior management and take appropriate action to cost-effectively resolve within policy limits
- Research and analyze case-specific legal issues, lien language, settlement releases, laws, regulations, etc. to identify coverage issues
- Work in partnership with and foster a culture of teamwork and excellence with Claim Department managers and staff to effectively determine liability and secure appropriate settlements
- Proactively contribute to the development of internal policies, guidelines, and tools to enhance risk mitigation efforts and optimize team performance.
- Respond to pertinent regulatory, producer and consumer inquiries
- Identify process improvements to increase efficiency
- Control legal costs and expenses to the extent reasonably possible
- Maintain an effective and organized operation
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited school
- Minimum 4 years automobile claim file experience either with an insurance company, a defense practice or plaintiff’s firm
- A responsible, analytical, detail oriented, conscientious nature and ability to fast track claims and follow up on problematic files
- Excellent negotiating results
- Good judgment and quality work product
- Strong interpersonal skills with a proven ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment
- Excellent understanding of auto insurance carrier regulations, judicial decisions and laws
- Understanding of the concepts of court processes
- Street smarts
- Strong liability exposure analysis and assessment skills
- Ability to problem solve and find solutions expeditiously
- Ability to enhance knowledge or learn and develop an expertise in insurance coverages and policy contracts
- Proficiency with technology, primarily Microsoft Office – Word and Excel
- Claim adjuster license(s) a plus
