Brief Summary
Title: General Accounting Manager
You'll Report to: Assistant Controller
The General Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing the accounting operations of a growing homeowners insurance company. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, compliance with industry-specific regulations, and efficient management of accounting functions. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in financial management, regulatory compliance, and process improvement to support the company’s growth trajectory.
What You’ll Do
Treasury Management
- Leads a team entrusted with managing the company’s outgoing payments to vendors and incoming payments from customers.
- Oversees accurate financial recording, timely processing of invoices and maintenance of healthy cash flow.
- Serves as a liaison to accounting vendors, including banks.
Financial Reporting and Analysis:
- Assists in the preparation, review, and analysis of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and insurance-specific accounting regulations (e.g., statutory accounting principles).
- Provide financial insights and variance analyses to support decision-making.
Team Leadership and Management:
- Supervise and mentor the accounting team, ensuring high performance and professional growth.
- Oversee the daily operations of accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and payroll functions.
- Foster a collaborative and supportive work environment aligned with company values.
Compliance and Regulatory Reporting:
- Ensure compliance with all state insurance regulatory requirements, including financial filings.
- Coordinate with auditors for statutory and external audits.
- Maintain and enforce strong internal controls to mitigate financial risks.
Process Optimization:
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and implement scalable solutions.
- Lead the adoption and integration of accounting technology and systems upgrades.
Special Projects:
- Partner with cross-functional teams on financial initiatives and strategic projects.
What You’ll Need to be a Top Candidate
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business, or other related field from a four-year institution.
Experience: 4 to 7 years in an accounting role, preferably within the insurance industry. The ideal candidate with have a proven track record in a supervisory or managerial role. Experience with statutory accounting is a plus.
Skills & Knowledge:
- Proficiency in accounting software and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- General Ledger or Accounts Payable systems
- Proper oral communication; speaks clearly, listens respectfully.
- Exceptional organization skills and high attention to detail.
- Ability to problem solve and work independently.
