GROUP: Temporary (3 Year Term)

HOURS:  Full averaging 40 hours per week

JOB PURPOSE:  

The Education Coordinator plays a critical support role to the Education Manager in the planning, coordination, and delivery of American Prairie’s signature education programs including the American Prairie Field School and children’s programming at the National Discovery Center. This position focuses on administrative tasks, curriculum and program support, logistics coordination, and evaluation of program effectiveness. This role ensures smooth day-to-day operations by  collaborating with educators, researchers, American Prairie staff, and other partners to  maintain an exceptional learning experience that supports American Prairie’s mission and initiatives to increase

knowledge and awareness of the unique grassland ecosystem and environmental conservation.

 

 

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES:

  • Coordinate, assist with planning, day to day logistics and administration (including food and lodging), facilitation, and evaluation of programs for educational groups (both daytime and overnight) at Antelope Creek “Field Campus.” 
  • Assist the Yellowstone Forever Lead Instructor and Program Director in supervising day-to-day activities of seasonal Yellowstone Forever instructors; keeping the Education Manager up to date on activities and escalating issues as needed.
  • Assist with delivering children’s educational programming at the National Discovery Center. 
  • Act as liaison for researchers and teachers from the Smithsonian, Aaniih and Nakoda tribes, American Prairie staff, and other stakeholders.
  • Assist the Education Manager with developing American Prairie-specific curriculum blocks with American Prairie staff and collaborators. 
  • Coordinate and assist with the annual review of the American Prairie curriculum written by Yellowstone Forever and/or other education contractors and update as needed.
  • Collaborate with education partners like Yellowstone Forever Institute to deliver educational programming to Montana schools each year.  
  • Assist the Education manager in recruiting schools and teachers to participate in overnight programming.
  • Assists the Education Manager with recruitment and implementation of the annual teacher workshop.
  • Provide feedback and updates on the progress of programs to the Education Manager. 
  • Assist with other community outreach support as needed.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • Enthusiasm for and positive representation of American Prairie’s mission, values, goals, and culture. 
  • Highly skilled and experienced in planning, coordinating, scheduling, and organizing.
  • Ability to work independently. 
  • Highly adaptable and skilled in troubleshooting and problem-solving.
  • Ability to work with children from diverse backgrounds and create an inclusive environment where all children feel welcome. 
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
  • Proficient with current technology devices and software including cloud-based software.
  • Able to work a variable schedule, including weekends, evenings, and overnights.
  • Ability to travel to the Field and throughout Montana.
  • Valid Driver’s license, acceptable driving record, and ability to drive.
  • Wilderness First Aid certification or ability to obtain upon hire. 
  • Natural science or education undergraduate degree preferred.
  • Ability to carry 50 lbs and work in adverse weather.

Preferred

  • Outdoor education experience delivering interpretive programming in a natural science setting.
  • Outdoor leadership experience or traveling school experience. 
  • Previous experience working with children in a professional setting (e.g. teacher, daycare worker, camp counselor).
  • Experience in planning and facilitating age-appropriate activities and learning programs. 
  • Familiarity with child safeguarding and protection policies, and commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all children in American Prairie’s programs. 
  • Certified interpretive guide (CIG) certification. 
  • Bachelor's degree in natural science, education, or related field.
