Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

Phlebotomist position: cover a range of duties and locations in order to collect patient specimens for testing at our laboratory. A quality test result begins with a quality patient sample. Without a properly drawn and labeled specimen, laboratory testing may not be possible or test results may be compromised. Knowledge of the proper techniques to be used when performing a venipuncture is necessary to assure the collection of a blood specimen suitable for testing with a minimum amount of trauma to the patient. The accuracy of each test performed in the laboratory is relative to the quality of the specimen. The phlebotomist is the laboratory’s representative of the patient; the phlebotomist’s role requires a professional, courteous, and understanding manner in all contact with the patient.

The Pre-Analytic Personnel must be skilled and adept at performing the following duties as checked below within 90 days of hire to meet quality and production scheduled as a requirement for the position.

PHLEBOTOMIST Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Requirement: All applicants must be proficient in phlebotomy prior to selection as evidenced by 6 months of successful experience with satisfactory evaluation;
  • Arrive timely to obtain blood specimens and specimen pick-ups from clients;
  • Safe and timely transportation of these specimens to the laboratory;
  • Understand specimen draw requirements and check with the laboratory regarding collection issues or questions;
  • Coordinate requests, pick-ups, and travel to clients to ensure the quickest turnaround time to deliver excellent care while maintaining professionalism at all times;
  • Follow all regulatory and governmental requirements (e.g. HIPAA, Patient Rights, CLIA, OSHA);
  • Secure, store, and centrifuge specimens per laboratory specimen integrity procedures;
  • Perform routine and STAT phlebotomy daily; may include weekends, holidays, and on-call;
  • Accept all orders from pre-analytic supervisor as needed;
  • Act as the liaison between laboratory and client to provide continuous high-quality customer service;
  • Adheres to the dress code, including wearing of Celesta photo ID badge;
  • Check lab-provided client supply needs during normally scheduled service to that client;
  • Utilize company-issued devices such as those for specimen tracking for company purposes only;
  • Assist with accessioning, order entry, coding, filing, and general upkeep of the laboratory;
  • Fill supply orders for clients and route phlebotomy needs;
  • Participate in continuing education and competency testing programs to ensure that laboratory and State standards (as applicable) are met;
  • Maintain competency in DOT-regulated shipping procedures for all samples and materials;
  • Submit payroll documentation timely and in accordance with company policy;
  • Keep personal vehicle operational at all times. May be required to use a personal vehicle to transport specimens. Current automobile insurance is required;

Ø Adhere to all applicable confidentiality requirements and the Code of conduct set forth by the laboratory.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Ø As required by Federal, State, or local law

Ø Maintain current active driver’s license in good standing as required for job duties

Ø Maintain personal vehicle and auto insurance continuously to meet job duty requirements

Ø Maintain yearly competency in areas assigned

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ø High ability to communicate in English, written and verbally, within all levels of the organization

Ø Highly self-motivated with excellent interpersonal skills

Ø Communicates with supervisor, managers, co-workers, and clients

MATH SKILLS:

Ø Basic math skills

COMPUTER SKILLS:

Ø Basic skill in Microsoft Office Products (Excel, Word, Outlook)

Ø Basic computer data entry

Ø Ability to create and work with simple Excel sheets/workbooks

Ø Ability to quickly learn proprietary software programs

Ø Basic phone operation skills

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Travel may be required in course of work duties. Use of personal or company car may be required for such tasks.
