The Department of Management at the Kogod School of Business in American University invites applications for an open-rank, non-tenure track faculty position starting in August 2025. All application materials are to be submitted electronically through Workday.
Qualifications. We welcome applications from scholarly and other professional backgrounds in line with the position needs. Preferred candidates will have (1) Ph.D., MBA, JD, or related graduate or terminal degree from a nationally-accredited institution in Business Management or other relevant fields; (2) 3-5 years of leadership roles within the sports industry (e.g., management roles in professional sports teams, athletic organizations, or event planning); (3) familiarity with emerging areas like eSports management, sports analytics, athlete development, or international sports business is highly valuable; (4) strong ties to the sports industry to facilitate internships, guest lectures, and career opportunities for students; (5) ability to develop relationships with professional sports organizations in the region as well as other organizations and leaders in the sports ecosystem; (6) familiarity with business foundations such as accounting, marketing, finance, and data analytics as they apply to the sports industry; (7) knowledge of current trends like social media marketing in sports, data analytics for performance evaluation, or legal compliance issues in athletics; (8) demonstrated ability to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in sports management topics such as sports marketing, sports law, event management, facility operations, and sports finance and versatility in teaching general management courses; (9) strong commitment to high-quality pedagogy, including currency in teaching content, methods, and instructional technology; (10) experience designing and teaching online or hybrid courses could be advantageous; (11) demonstrated collegiality, good citizenship, professional background and commitment to serve the school.
Responsibilities. Candidates are expected to design, implement, and lead a Sports Management program within our Business Entertainment major. They are expected to be familiar with the scholarly basis of pedagogy and the content of the teaching areas. Expertise in teaching general management areas would also be appreciated. They are also expected to participate in department, school, university and professional activities.
Initial appointments are typically at the rank of Professorial Lecturer for one year and renewable subject to satisfactory review/performance and budgetary approval. Ranked renewable term faculty are eligible to be considered for promotion subject to the appropriate qualification and promotion requirements. The standard teaching load for term faculty is six courses per year. In compliance with DC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $100,000 - $150,000.
The committee will accept applications until the position is filled. The review process will begin immediately.
