American Wood Fibers (AWF), a rapidly growing manufacturer of consumer and industrial products sold to other manufacturers and to pet, agricultural and home heating markets, seeks a EHS Manager based at our Columbia, Maryland location. AWF manufactures at 10 locations spanning the nation, has over 400 employees and generates over $120M in annual sales revenue.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary duties to include, but not limited to the following :
- SAFETY :
- Administer Corporate and Plant Safety policies and procedures to all employees, including onboarding training for all AWF new hires. Review Policies yearly for updates / Revisions.
- Coordinate and administer the safety program at all AWF’s facilities, to include the managing of company safety programs and processes, conduct accident / fire investigations, conduct safety inspections, maintain product SDS thru on-line service, ensure OSHA required training for all employees is complete, participate quarterly in AWF location safety meetings, and analyze injury statistics.
- Facilitate AWF site inspections and initiate corrective action(s) by training and directing management on how to inspect facilities, work sites and equipment for violations and hazards. Provide direction to Senior Leadership on ways to correct identified problems in a timely manner, then audit / follow up to confirm.
- Manage the Computer based Incident Management Program, ensuring proper use and accuracy of data along with timely Reporting through Closure of all incidents. Follow up to insure all accidents are investigated to determine the root cause and provide recommendations that eliminate or reduce future hazard or risk.
- Respond promptly on all AWF Safety related injuries and incidents. This may include availability on nights and weekends, when urgent situations arise.
- Respond as needed to outside agencies or attorneys regarding safety, environmental, and / or OSHA regulatory issues.
- Conduct safety audits to investigate and record safety items that need completing to include annual on-site audits at each facility. Promote partnership with manufacturing sites for continuous improvement of safety programs ensuring compliance with AWF Policies.
- Facilitate worker’s compensation reporting in partnership with the Office Managers to ensure the annual OSHA log is routinely updated and posted at all locations, as applicable by law.
- Work in partnership with Columbia Human Resources on all worker’s compensation events. This includes, but is NOT limited to managing worker compensation updates / appointments and attending worker compensation hearings or conference calls. Provide guidance on employee’s workers compensation claims and light duty / modified duty work assignments.
- Promote positive employee / safety relations by advising and making decisions that are fair, consistent and compliant with company policies and procedures and all local, state and federal laws and regulations.
- Provide regular reporting (monthly) of Safety Metrics, Safety initiatives and ongoing Safety projects.
- COMPLIANCE
- Ensure compliance with national fire codes, sprinkler and fire systems; ensure periodic fire drills are completed and record results; conduct regular disaster drills and record results.
- Coordinate annual safety planning process for each location. Plan and ensure the safety portion of the new hire orientation is strong and fosters positive safety attitudes toward company goals including mandatory training topics.
- Participate in operation management meetings as required. Provide management reports as needed.
- PROCESS IMPROVEMENT
- Collaborate with Executive Leadership to develop and prioritize a project portfolio to improve key performance indicators.
- Ensure that processes are developed, established and implemented in alignment with the AWF mission, principles and culture.
- Develop the organization by training and coaching associates and leaders.
- QUALIFICATIONS
- Associate degree or higher is required. Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Safety, Occupational Safety and Health, or related field preferred.
- Five years of related experience preferred.
- Must have a solid understanding of Federal and State OSHA, EPA laws and regulations; Previous supervisory experience is required; OSHA 30 Hour Certification is required, but OSHA 40 Hour Certification is preferred.
- Accurate data entry skills and ability to keep matters highly confidential
- Detail oriented and able to handle multiple priorities
- Travel is required, up to 30%; a minimum of once annually to each AWF location
