Job Title : Manager, Environmental Health & Safety

Department : Environmental Health & Safety

FLSA Status : Exempt

Reports to : AVP, Facilities Management

Work Schedule : 35 hours / week; 12 months / year

Union : N / A

Grade Level : 6

Salary Range : $47,700 - $59,600

Position summary : Provide primary support to the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) office.

General purpose : Serve as a knowledgeable environmental safety and health resource for the campus community, while providing direct support to EHS in development, maintenance and achievement of EHS strategic initiatives.

Position responsibilities :

  • Works with AVP- Facilities Management and campus wide stakeholders to perform site risk assessments and create targets and objectives based on identified key EHS risks.
  • Supports development of leading and lagging indicators to track performance against targets and objectives.
  • Maintains and monitors current information and College compliance on government EHS regulations and governance policy. Prepares required reports, plans, and other government EHS filings and ensures timely and accurate submission.
  • Supports coordination of all OSHA compliance programs, including, but not limited to; PPE, Hearing Conservation, Respiratory Protection, Machine Guarding, Lock Out Tag Out, Confined Space, Industrial Powered Trucks, Contractor safety, and Hazard communication.
  • Supports industrial hygiene efforts including personal exposure monitoring.
  • Develop, implement, and document safety training and programs for students, faculty, using training matrices to ensure that all training is defined and tracked to completion.
  • Notify the AVP- Facilities Management of any EHS deficiencies or violations on campus.
  • Proactively conduct safety and environmental audits and implement resulting action plans.
  • Drive site specific annual safety plan including life safety and GHS compliance.
  • Proactively develop and update safety processes and procedures including regulatory requirements.
  • Establish and maintain good working and professional relationships with MICA faculty, staff and community.
  • Develop strategies and programs to deliver quality and cost-effective training to individuals throughout the College.
  • Promote EHS awareness throughout all facilities using established programs in behavioral safety, hazard recognition and accountability. Maintain site EHS metrics including regulatory record keeping.
  • Represent the College and provide direction and guidance during Federal, State and local inspections as well as serve as an occasional primary point of contact (Facilities on Duty) for after-hours emergencies.
  • Provide safety training and instruction.
  • Promote synergies between environmental protection, economic stability and social equity in College activities.
  • Performs other assignments and works as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

  • Excellent presentation skills and an ability to train in a didactic environment.
  • Ability to work in various climatic conditions and around materials typically used in the making of works of art (e.g., clay, ceramics dust, fibers, wood shop areas, printmaking, painting, sculpture, drawing mediums, etc.)
  • Ability to follow directions and work independently, ability to plan and prioritize or work as part of a team; ability to work in a fast paced environment with a sense of urgency.
  • Ability to research regulations, learn through job experience or formal training; solve problems, ask questions, and think through solutions related to SHE.
  • Proficient computer skills on Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and databases.
  • Ability to track and compare data and make simple projections.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Minimum requirments :

  • Bachelor's degree in a Safety Sciences related field.
  • Demonstrated Environmental Health and Safety experience in a Federal, State, Local Government or Higher Education environment.
  • Strong OSHA and EPA Regulatory Compliance experience
  • CPR, AED and First Aid certification.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of sustainability efforts.
  • Valued, but not required qualifications :

  • OSHA 30 certification.
  • Basic knowledge of the fire alarm systems, plumbing, electrical, HVAC / R and carpentry trades.
  • Experience working in a higher Ed environment
  • Reporting to this position : Part-time student workers.

    Conditions of Employment :

  • Satisfactory background check.
  • Candidates must have completed an approved HAZWOPER training or equivalent within one year of initial hire.
  • Required to work holidays and weekends when on call.
  • This position is an "essential personnel," meaning the attendance for snow removal, 24-hour emergency response availability, and presence for campus emergencies is mandatory.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record.

The employee must occasionally lift up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. (may be adjusted depending on position)
  • Work environment : While performing the duties of the job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.
  • Required training : Handbook orientation, Anti-Harassment, Hazard Communication, Emergency Plans & Fire Prevention, Personal Protection Equipment. (additional training may be added, SEE : EHS Manager training schedule)
