For 18 years Piece by Piece has been empowering individuals who have experienced homelessness and economic hardship in and around LA’s Skid Row and South Los Angeles neighborhoods. By providing free workshops in mosaic arts Piece by Piece has created an environment of learning through the healing practice of the creative arts that enables participants to gain confidence, engage in social interaction, participate in a community of support, partake in the potential to earn income, and most importantly, to achieve improved sense of well-being and a more stable financial footing.
Member Duties : The Mosaics Program Coordinator VISTA at Piece by Piece strengthens the organization’s ability to serve individuals experiencing homelessness, trauma, or economic insecurity by supporting the daily operations of free mosaic art workshops. This VISTA ensures smooth class operations by developing efficient systems for setup, cleanup, and access to materials. They enhance participant engagement by creating user-friendly tools for tracking attendance and identifying barriers to participation—adding thoughtful touches like a “How are you feeling today?” emoji check-in. The Coordinator also formalizes the certification pathway, designs a peer mentoring program, and builds communication systems for instructors to share updates and address classroom needs. This role is central to improving the participant experience and growing the capacity of the Piece by Piece community.
