We have an exciting opportunity here at Ameriprise as a Senior Counsel!
As a Senior Counsel, you'll provide legal advice and strategic support on all aspects of the company’s global employee benefits and executive compensation programs. Additional programs where you'll make a direct impact include qualified retirement plans, ERISA requirements, healthcare and welfare plans, non-qualified deferred compensation plans and equity incentive plans.

Key Responsibilities
Provide advice and support relating to retirement, health and welfare, and nonqualified deferred compensation and incentive pay plans as well as related administrative and payroll matters, including support of the governance and regulatory needs of related fiduciary committees.
Review plan documents, participant communications, and related materials, and advise on plan administration and related regulatory requirements.
Partner across the General Counsel’s Organization (GCO) with subject matter experts in other disciplines on employee benefit and executive compensation matters.
Understand business needs and goals in a fast-paced, highly regulated environment, working with urgency toward effective, practical, and timely legal solutions.
Develop direct relationships and provide strong communication and organizational skills to work effectively and cooperatively with internal business partners and to coordinate on matters simultaneously.
Actively support the GCO’s value proposition and culture of engagement.
Required Qualifications
Law Degree from an Accredited Law School with 7-10 years of experience as a practicing lawyer.
Significant experience with and knowledge of all aspects of employee benefits, including qualified retirement plans, healthcare and welfare plans, non-qualified deferred compensation plans, equity and incentive compensation plans, and related fiduciary, tax and compliance matters (ERISA, Section 409A of the Internal Revenue Code, and other applicable laws).
Experience with executive compensation, including related governance and disclosure requirements applicable to public companies, and operation and documentation of compensation-related matters for the compensation committee, Board and other oversight committees.
Significant experience advising on plan compliance with the requirements of ERISA, COBRA, HIPAA, the Americans With Disabilities Act and various state and federal leave laws.
Ability to manage projects independently and manage competing priorities and deadlines.
Excellent drafting, research, and negotiation skills and the ability to draft and interpret sophisticated agreements, plans and award documentation.
Ability to communicate results to appropriate audiences and suggest risk assessed alternative courses of action.
Ability to monitor and analyze developments and trends in areas of responsibility and master new bodies of legal knowledge as regulations and business objectives evolve.
Admitted to practice law in the state of Minnesota, Massachusetts, North Carolina or eligible for admission as in-house counsel.
Preferred Qualifications

Base Pay Salary
The estimated base salary for this role is $147,000 - $198,500 / year. We have a pay-for-performance compensation philosophy. Your initial total compensation may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and geographical work location. In addition, most of our roles are eligible for variable pay in the form of bonus, commissions, and/or long-term incentives depending on the role.
