Job Description:
Amherst College invites applications for the Mathematics Quantitative Fellow position. The Mathematics Quantitative Fellow is a full-time, one-year term position starting at $19.72/hour. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.
The Mathematics Quantitative Fellow is a "green dean" position for a recent Amherst College graduate who is interested in providing support for students in Mathematics. The Math fellow provides support for students in intermediate math courses and encourages students of diverse backgrounds, including groups under-represented in mathematics, first-generation college students, and students with varying mathematical preparation. The Fellow also provides support for students preparing to take the departmental Comprehensive Exam.
Takes appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participates in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.
Summary of Responsibilities:
- Providing support, in the form of drop-in tutoring, appointments and workshops, for students in intermediate mathematics courses, particularly Math 220 (Mathematical Reasoning), Math 271/2 (Linear Algebra), Math 350 (Groups, Rings and Fields) and Math 355 (Analysis)
- The Fellow will coordinate with the faculty teaching those courses and review materials to prepare for meeting with students
- Coordinating with other Math staff in the Moss Q Center to decide on division of support and schedules
- Also works with the QCenter directors on planning and participates in college trainings
- Engages in professional development and further education
Qualifications:
Required
- BA from Amherst College w/ major in Mathematics or related discipline
- Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
- Facility with online communication
- Commitment to working with a diverse community
Preferred
- Tutoring experience while an Amherst College student
