Job Summary
The Town of Amherst is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Assistant Public Works Director. This full-time, exempt role is focused on advancing our environmental compliance efforts and reinforcing our commitment to sustainable practices. The Assistant Public Works Director will primarily oversee compliance with the Town's MS4/Stormwater and Multi-Sector General Permits (MSGP) while managing the Town’s community septic system. This role also entails providing administrative support to the Public Works Director and supervising department operations in their absence.
Key Responsibilities: Ensure adherence to environmental regulations pertaining to MS4 and MSGP permits. Manage sampling and monitoring activities related to the Town's environmental programs. Develop and revise Town ordinances and bylaws to achieve compliance with relevant environmental standards. Represent the Town at regional Stormwater Coalition meetings and professional conferences. Oversee the management of the Baboosic Lake Community septic system. Assist in the development and execution of departmental policies, budgets, and management initiatives. Train and guide Public Works personnel to ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
Qualifications: Environmental and/or civil engineering degree. Strong understanding of public administration and municipal processes, including grant writing and budget management. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and a readiness to adopt new technologies. Starting salary: $94,952 to $100,714 depending on qualifications.
