JOB SUMMARY: The Hyperbaric Technician is responsible to the Center Medical Director, hyperbaric physicians, Program Director and APEx administration for the successful implementation, management, and safety of the resources and personnel, which comprise the hyperbaric unit. Responsibilities include but are not limited to safe, smooth, and efficient operation of the monoplace hyperbaric medicine center; direct patient care in the hyperbaric unit; effective communication with all personnel on areas impacting patient treatments and outcomes.

REPORTS TO: The hyperbaric technician reports directly to the Program Director, with a dotted line to the Clinical Manager and assigned APEx hyperbaric administrator.

KEY JOB FUNCTIONS:

Direct Patient Care Services:

  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of HBO therapy, and the different approved clinical indications and treatment protocols for HBO treatment.
  • Delivers care to the patient immediately prior to, during, and immediately following the HBO treatment that is consistent with his/her scope of practice and documents all aspects of that care into the medical record.
  • Monitors and ensures the proper delivery of treatment gas as ordered.
  • Monitors the patients continually during treatments for symptoms of oxygen toxicity, claustrophobia, hypoglycemic reactions, or any other adverse reaction to HBO treatments.
  • Under the direction of the supervising physician or non-physician provider or Clinical Manager/ Program Director or designee, appropriately intervenes in the event of an adverse reactions and follows established protocols.
  • Demonstrates competence in education on common topics related to the HBO therapy and related underlying disease processes.
  • Demonstrates competence in performing ordered treatments including but not limited to vital signs, blood sugars, and emergency procedures consistent with existing policies and within his/her scope of practice.
  • Documents required elements of each treatment in a clear, concise manner that includes a description of the chamber settings, duration of treatment, patient response to the procedure, and any other relevant observations made.

Safety Related Operations:

  • Operates, maintains, and ensures safety of the hyperbaric facility and all associated systems and equipment while in charge of a treatment.
  • Works closely with facility management, hyperbaric medical director, and the hyperbaric physicians to establish procedures for the safe operation and maintenance of the hyperbaric facility.
  • Makes necessary recommendations for departmental safety policies and procedures.
  • Has the authority, in cooperation with the medical director, to restrict or remove any potentially hazardous supply or equipment items from the chamber.
  • Provides on the job training to technicians in chamber operation, log procedures, maintenance, etc.
  • Ensures appropriate entries are made in all required operating, maintenance, and safety logs.
  • Performs and directs staff in the performance of routine preventive maintenance and cleaning of the chamber and equipment.

Human Resource Management:

  • Responsible for the training and continuing education of the facility staff on hyperbaric safety and emergency protocols.

Quality Management:

  • Actively participates in the Quality/Performance Improvement Program and participates in selecting indicators for performance improvement.

Finance:

  • Responsible for maintaining adequate supplies including gases, and equipment maintenance under the direction of the Program Director.
  • Responsible for reviewing documentation integrity and completeness prior to beginning a course of hyperbaric therapy using established documentation requirements associated with each indication.

Reimbursement:

  • Must have basic knowledge of CMS requirements and secondary payor authorizations.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrates a strong background in hyperbaric medicine, diving physiology, and/or aerospace medicine as demonstrated through the successful completion of a UHMS and NBDHMT approved training course.
  • Demonstrates an extensive safety and mechanical knowledge of monoplace hyperbaric chambers through either experience or completion of a hyperbaric safety course.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the planning and execution of professional and community education on hyperbaric medicine.
  • Demonstrates effective problem solving and negotiation skills.
  • Presents themselves in a professional manner and works well with others.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work within a complex healthcare environment.
  • Demonstrates competency in use of various computer software, including word processing; spreadsheet; and Internet functions.

CANDIDATE PROFILE:

Required Qualifications:

  • 40-hour UHMS and NBDHMT approved training course.
  • Certified Hyperbaric Technician (CHT) or CHT eligible preferred.
  • Must maintain all appropriate licenses and certifications.
  • At least 1 year experience in clinical hyperbaric medicine.
  • BCLS certified.
  • Knowledgeable regarding various accrediting and regulatory agencies, such as NFPA, UHMS, and TJC.

Pay: $28.00 - $35.00 per hour
