Primary Responsibilities:
Exercises complete responsibility from filling to delivery of multiple melting units to melt batch and deliver various glasses of the required quantity and quality. This regularly involves the simultaneous multiple operation of various combinations of tanks, forehearths, forebays, pots, etc., as assigned. This work includes such duties as:
Takes and records optical, thermocouple, amperage, voltage, and resistance readings on melting unions and platinum parts and makes necessary adjustments to maintain process control. Observes condition of refractory and interior of melting unit, records, and informs Supervisor of conditions needing his attention.
Controls tank, forehearth, forebay, etc. temperatures, combustion rates, gas and air pressure, rate to fill, power control, etc. according to established procedures, schedules, and/or glass consumption rate by reading various control and recording instruments and making necessary adjustments to deliver required quality and quantity of glass for forming. Diagnoses unusual melting problems and makes necessary adjustments.
Cools down and brings up temperatures in tanks, forehearths and forebays. Adjusts gas, air, vents, and electrical power to achieve proper heat, flow, and viscosity.
Installs and operates the composite orifices and delivery system.
Changes and positions hot refractory parts such as needles, sleeves, and rings, also changes stirrers, etc.
Cleans, changes, and adjusts high and low pressure gas and oil burners. Installs tank and forehearth electrodes, changes tap positions, thermocouples, etc. Maintains records of all changes and adjustments.
As requested or required, assembles information on depth of glass in forehearth, forebay, and bowl, glass flow, glass quality, etc.
Operates power control and booster melting equipment, according to established procedures, which supply current to various rings, tubes and drains.
Controls overflows and drains on melting units, starting, running, and stopping as required by operating conditions.
Operates needle and clay parts preheating kilns and glory holes. Taps tank both electrically and with pneumatic drill. Drain tanks at completion of run or for glass changes.
Has part time direction of apprentices.
Operates and monitors all pollution control devices.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED REQUIRED
- One year of manufacturing experience preferred.
- Starting hourly rate $26.03

Attendance:
- The position you are being considered for requires you to be on time and not miss time for your entire probationary period. Every new employee shall be a probationary Employee for a period of ninety (90) calendar days from the date the employee first reports for work. Additionally, there will be required overtime and when scheduled, employees are expected to work mandatory overtime.
Comp Range: The starting rate-$26.03 through $30.72 (8,000 hr. apprenticeship)
These are contractual rates during the effective contract 8/1/2024 through 1/30/2028.
