- A bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, or a related field. Seven years of experience in finance, accounting, or payroll may be considered in lieu of the degree requirement.
- Three years of experience in high volume payroll processing with a medium to large sized organization.
- Experience with federal and state payroll laws and reporting regulations and requirements.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, with a minimum of intermediate spreadsheet skill in Excel.
- Proficiency with complex financial software packages.
- Prior school business or governmental accounting experience.
- Proficiency with the BusinessPlus financial software package.
- Maintains complete payroll records including monthly, quarterly, and annual reconciliations of payroll accounts and reports.
- Assists in preparing financial entries and payroll reporting including federal 941 and W-2s as well as other local and state employment reports as directed.
- Coordinates with various schools and departments to ensure that proper information is recorded in the appropriate system of record.
- Assists schools and departments with payroll matters, including timecards, addenda, recordkeeping, leave, deductions, etc.
- Maintains understanding of multiple collective bargaining agreements in reference to administering payroll.
- Processes full payroll cycle, close, and check requisitions for payroll deductions such as garnishments, levies, student loans, etc.
- Prepares, updates, files, and otherwise maintains, in useful form, appropriate schedules and work papers in support of cost such as salaries and benefits.
- Quickly and accurately makes complex computations and summarizes them into appropriate schedules and statements.
- Prepares and submits accurate analyses of financial data and other required reports such as union dues, health and welfare, as well as others as directed.
- Researches and understands current and proposed regulations, accounting principles, and other statutory requirements, including payroll garnishments/levies and applicable withholding laws.
- Assists with new payroll developments such as testing and implementation, as required.
- Identifies areas of concern with accounting system or payroll processes, recommends changes, or identifies possible solutions to streamline and increase efficiencies.
- Works directly with the Information Technology Department on hardware and software problems to resolve and reduce impact on processing.
- Works with a minimum level of supervision, prioritizing and scheduling own workload for timely completion of tasks and assigned projects within direction and scope.
- Maintains confidentiality while working accurately and efficiently, with strong attention to detail, both as part of a team as well as independently.
- Communicates openly, positively, and effectively to provide exceptional customer service and to support the department and ASD as a whole, both in speaking and in writing.

Job Summary
The Payroll Coordinator maintains and processes payroll for the Anchorage School District in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and state and federal wage and hour laws and regulations. The coordinator processes payroll transactions, prepares journal entries, performs reconciliations, prepares payroll records, and reports, and provides support to schools and other departments. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).

The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs.
