Summary
The Outside Sales Representative (OSR) is responsible for managing a diverse territory of assigned customers and prospects, with a focus on selling paint products, supplies, and equipment. Success in this role comes from building strong partnerships with contractors—not just as a supplier, but as a trusted advisor who supports the growth and success of their business.
This unique relationship requires a combination of product knowledge, business insight, and genuine customer care. Key performance indicators include achieving financial targets such as sales volume, new account development, and gross margin dollars—measured against defined, periodic goals.

Essential Job Functions
- Meet or exceed quotas and/or objectives with respect to sales volume (revenue); margins; business development (new accounts); and gallons sold.
- Collaborate with store managers to ensure satisfactory levels of customer service; avoidance of product returns and mis-tints; efficient management of inventory; and appropriate handling of customer accounts, which will include the periodic delivery of product in a company vehicle.
- Find, qualify, and close revenue-generating leads.
- Provide accurate project estimates. Quote price and terms of sale.
- Cultivate key prospects and long-term customer relationships. Develop new business.
- Promote the fair resolution of customer issues, including those that pertain to product performance.
- Follow through on account leads from segment (e.g., property, architectural, commercial, and industrial) sales representatives.
- Each OSR is responsible for aggressively working every account in his/her book of business.
- Monitor and communicate customer credit and customer payments in accordance with credit terms and Company guidelines. Initiate and/or cooperate with collection efforts in accordance with the law and Company policy.
- Support marketing and promotional activities in the district.
- Regularly participate in all Company meetings, functions, and trainings as required.
- Participate in relevant professional organizations, associations, trade shows and conventions.
- As members of the Anderson Paint sales team, the ultimate objective is to be the #1 choice for our customers for paint products, sundries, and equipment.

Physical/Cognitive Requirements
- Ability to communicate in English.
- Ability to use a computer for various business applications.
- Ability to prepare and organize numeric and non-numeric records and data in digital and print formats, including contracts, activity reports, and expense reports.
- Ability to multi-task, manage competing priorities, and flex with the circumstances.
- Good time management skills
- A valid driver’s license and the ability to drive 50-75% of the work day
Qualifications
- At least four years of relevant professional experience in the paint and/or coatings industry.
- Excellent communication skills, including oral and written comprehension and expression, and superior listening skills.
- Sufficient financial skills to understand profit and loss, read an operating statement, and assess a credit report.
- Demonstrated knowledge of principles and methods for providing customer service, including assessing the customer’s needs, meeting quality standards, and evaluating customer satisfaction.
- Demonstrated ability to negotiate for long-term objectives.
- Ability to be self-motivated and work independently with minimal supervision.
