POSITION SUMMARY

This is an exciting opportunity to lead communications projects and campaign strategy for Trout Unlimited (TU) in Alaska, where we work to conserve some of the most important remaining salmon and trout habitat in the Pacific Northwest.

This position works closely with our talented and hardworking Alaska team, as well as our supporters and partners, to translate the shared values of river and fish lovers into meaningful conservation wins by developing and implementing communications and organizing strategies that support TU’s overall mission.

The ideal candidate is creative, self-directed and solution-oriented with a passion for conserving Alaska’s wild rivers and landscapes. They have demonstrated the ability to develop, implement and manage effective communications and advocacy strategies to achieve desired outcomes. They are an exceptional writer, savvy on multichannel media platforms (both traditional and social) and able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. They thrive in a fast-paced environment with hard working colleagues and partners.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contribute to, and play a leadership role in, a high-functioning, interdisciplinary team.
  • Develop and implement a multimedia communications and advocacy strategy for conservation campaigns and initiatives to maximize public engagement and media coverage to achieve our objectives.
  • Manage communications to ensure an accurate, compelling, clear and consistent voice across communications products and channels including newsletters, press releases, feature and opinion articles, fact sheets, fundraising appeals, and content for website and social media.
  • Assist TU staff with advocacy and communications strategy, writing and editing, fundraising, and analysis of political opportunities.
  • Use a CRM system to track data and apply communications metrics to measure and maximize the effectiveness of strategies and tactics.
  • Compellingly communicate TU’s conservation impact to target audiences, including anglers, advocates and funders. Develop and steward a network of media contacts.

This is not an all-inclusive list of duties and responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 5 years of experience in issue advocacy and / or political communications.
  • Creative, strategic and collaborative “problem-solver.” Dependable teammate.
  • Highly motivated, self-directed, and capable of identifying needs and responding with strategic action.
  • Able to develop, implement and manage multi-faceted communications and advocacy strategies. Extensive knowledge of a wide variety of communications platforms, including social media, and effective organizing principles.
  • Demonstrated success managing multiple projects simultaneously and meeting deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent analytical skills, news sense, and political savvy, ability to message inclusively in a manner that resonates across political and geographic spectrums.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, research, and framing / storytelling skills. Understanding and appropriate use of AP style.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Ability and desire to establish and build strong working relationships with teammates and diverse partners.
  • Commitment to the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Experience using organizing and data management tools (e.g., CRMs), tracking social media metrics, and using analytics platforms.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 (particularly Excel and Word), CRM databases, bulk email platforms and web applications. Strong graphic-design skills a plus.
  • Understanding of, or willingness to learn, Alaska’s geography, cultures, landscape and communities.
  • Passion for conserving Alaska’s rivers, salmon, trout and char.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, good sense of humor.
  • This position is preferably based in Alaska and will report directly to the Alaska Program Director.

Staff and leadership at TU understand that life outside of work is important to personal health, and we strive to create a healthy and family-friendly atmosphere. This is a full-time position with a generous benefits package. The approximate salary range is $60,000 – $78,000 depending on experience.

At TU, we value a diverse representation of staff, and we actively seek candidates for this position who come from communities that have been historically under-represented in conservation and those who have been most impacted by degraded rivers and streams. We are committed to building space for all people to participate in our work to care for trout and salmon and clean our shared waters.

Please send resume, cover letter, two published media samples that represent your professional skills (one should have substantial written content), and the names and contact information for three references to Trout Unlimited via our online job application system.
