Job Summary
This position is responsible for the coordination of benefits, authorization of scheduled procedures and the management of accurate payment information. Interacts directly with patients, families assure appropriate payment arrangements are made prior to services being rendered.
Reports To: Business Office Team Lead
Hourly Range: $19.50-$31.97 (posted hourly range excludes overtime and bonuses which are not guaranteed)
Essential Job Functions
- Displays excellent customer service standards in daily operations specifically pertaining to scheduling and insurance information dissemination to patients.
- Contacts all patients within 48 hours of surgery/imaging being scheduled at Animas Surgical Hospital to notify the patient they have been scheduled, their current benefits, authorization status and any amount owed on date of service.
- Assure accurate and timely notes are kept on all accounts to provide any staff subsequently working them to be fully aware of the patient’s circumstances.
- Ensures all estimate letters are prepared and informs patients of the estimate and signed by patient or guardian.
- Ensures all add on cases have benefits checked and authorization obtained prior to case start time.
- Responsible for all in hospital payment collections.
- Responsible for obtaining all authorizations coming from the ED.
- Communicates and interfaces with patients, providers, staff and others to ensure high-quality customer service.
- Is responsible for prioritization of tasks and workflow.
- Communicates collaboratively with team leaders to resolve issues and develop systems to facilitate the overall functions of the job and the customer relations department.
- Assists clerical staff with financial issues.

Minimum Requirements
Education: High School Diploma or the equivalent.
Experience, Training, Knowledge: 2-3 years medical billing experience required. Ability to work independently, confidentially and accurately.
Physical Requirements
Sensory and communicative activities including: hearing, seeing, and speaking. Lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to ten (10) pounds. Stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, grasping, handling, and balancing five (5) or more hours per day. Standing and walking more than five (5) hours per day in administration of patient medical records. Continuous sedentary to work more than five (5) hours per day.
Working Conditions/Environmental Exposures
Environmental hazards such as chemicals, solvents, needles, needle containers, sharps, blood, body fluids, various infectious/communicable diseases, infectious medical waste, radiation, and/or radioactive materials and/or radioactive waste, proximity to moving mechanical parts. Protective clothing/equipment may be necessary.
ASH IMMUNIZATIONS AND VACCINATIONS REQUIREMENTS– Aligns with CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) for Healthcare Personnel
Hepatitis B- Lab evidence of immunity (titer) to Hepatitis B or three doses Hep B vaccine at appropriate intervals
Influenza- documentation of current seasonal flu vaccine (mandatory from November 1st through March 31st each year)
Measles, Mumps, and Rubella - Lab evidence of immunity (titer) to Measles, Mumps, and Rubella or 2 doses of MMR Vaccination
Varicella (chickenpox) - Lab evidence of immunity (titer) to Varicella or 2 doses of Varicella Vaccine
Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap) - documented proof of immunization
Tuberculosis Screening- Documentation of a two-step TB skin test within the past year OR lab verification of a negative TB Gold or T-Spot tuberculin test within the past 6 months
