What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Engineer – Rocket Systems (Landing, Valves, Gimbal Integration) position at Anka Space?
We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer to lead the design, development, and integration of critical mechanical systems for our first reusable rocket prototype. Your primary responsibilities will include designing the engine gimbal (actuator) system and developing lightweight, impact-resistant landing legs. We value hands-on aerospace actuator design experience and strong material science knowledge to ensure robust and optimized solutions for demanding flight conditions.
Responsibilities
Engine Gimbal & Actuator Design
- Develop, test, and integrate the primary gimbal mechanism for thrust vector control (TVC).
- Collaborate with propulsion and avionics teams to ensure precise control authority and seamless system functionality.
Landing System Development
- Design, analyze, and prototype lightweight but durable landing legs for safe, repeatable landings.
- Conduct impact testing and iterative refinements to meet performance and reliability targets.
Material Selection & Structural Optimization
- Apply strong material science principles to choose and validate advanced materials for mechanical components.
- Perform load analyses, vibration testing, and stress simulations under extreme launch and landing conditions.
Valve & Fluid System Integration
- Collaborate with propulsion teams on high-pressure LOX/Ethanol valve installations, actuators, and plumbing.
- Ensure cohesive mechanical designs that integrate smoothly with the rocket’s overall fluid systems.
Manufacturing & Prototyping
- Employ CNC machining, 3D printing, composite layups, and other techniques to rapidly prototype components.
- Oversee the production process to meet performance, safety, and cost objectives.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with propulsion, avionics, and structural teams to align mechanical designs with system-level requirements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent Ability to read and understand designs and schematics
- Hands-on experience designing actuators for aerospace applications, including gimbal or control systems.
- Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
- Ability to multi-task, organize, and prioritize work
