Job Description

General Summary:

The Manager of Clinical Research Unit (CRU) oversees the duties and responsibilities of the Registered Nurses, (RNs), Research Nurses, Certified Medical Assistants (CMAs) and Point of Service (POS) Representatives for the unit. In collaboration with the Director of the Clinical Trials Office, the CRU Manager is responsible for the overall direction and supervision of clinical research activities and personnel in the unit. Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and institutional regulatory guidelines related to clinical research and affiliate operations. Partners with the clinical and non-clinical support services departments to ensure optimal scheduling and throughput practices. Supports care coordination and response to operational issues.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides complex clinical and technical leadership in determining research priorities presented to CRU.
  • Attracts, develops, and retains exceptional research staff. Providing them an environment that fosters excellence in research through continuous learning. Ensures all staff have appropriate training, education, supervision and monitoring to ensure effective, safe, efficient, productive and high-quality research operations.
  • Translates organizational vision into unit or service vision that engages staff in contributing to and achieving the mission of research.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with all customers including staff, research coordinators, physicians, study participants and/or respective family members. Facilitates mentoring and collaboration not only within CRU team but also ancillary research departments (i.e. Research Lab, Investigational Pharmacy, Imaging, etc.).
  • In collaboration with CRU Project Manager, maintains existing CRU processes. Ensures regulatory and policy standards are adhered to in all operations. Plans, develops and implements new processes to support and maintain standardized process with Protocol Feasibility, LOS (Letter of Support), Activation, Study start up to first enrollment thru study closure.
  • Collaborates with study teams to ensure optimal staffing and scheduling practices are achieved to ensure safe research study care as well as protocol integrity.
  • Collaborates with study teams and ancillary research support departments identified to conduct and ensure the success of each research protocol. Supports care coordination and response to operational issues. Clearly identifies the internal and external customers for each unit of service and their respective requirement/expectations. Actively seeks methods of concurrent and retrospective feedback from customers, listens to customer feedback and implements solutions and/or interventions as appropriate.
  • Acts as liaison between organizations and/or other clinical research institutions (i.e. NUCATS, NU, Prentice, Ability Lab, etc.)
  • Ensures clinical research best practices and billing compliance.
  • May create and/or manage budgets related to CRU research study budget; ensures appropriate allocation. In collaboration with CRU Project Manager; establishes, implements and monitors the unit or service area’s capital and operating budget to achieve defined targets.
  • Purchases supplies, materials, equipment and services.
  • Responsible for HR related functions including: hiring, timekeeping, performance evaluations, and terminations.
  • Other job functions as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a level of knowledge and experience normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Minimum of 5 years of clinical research experience to include at least 3 years in a pediatric research setting.
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory/leadership experience.
  • Licensed and professional nurse in the State of Illinois required.
  • Working knowledge of pediatrics and adult research populations.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including ability to effectively manage multiple competing responsibilities.
  • High level of initiative and autonomy.
  • Proficient in a variety of computer programs, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and working knowledge of EPIC, or electronic health records.
  • Strong leadership skills in a clinical research setting.
  • Strong analytical ability; ability to understand and interpret financial data; solid quantitative and qualitative skills. Training and demonstrated ability to apply quality improvement practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a leadership role with clinical, business and administrative staff. Strong customer service skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.

Pay Range

$89,440.00-$147,576.00 Salary

The pay range for this job indicates minimum and maximum targets for the position. Ranges are regularly reviewed to stay aligned with market conditions.
