Job Description
General Summary of Position Responsibility:
The Center for Autonomic Medicine in Pediatrics (CAMP) in the division of Autonomic Medicine at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital is the first of its kind in the world. The Center is an interdisciplinary program that studies infants, children and young adults with conditions that affect the autonomic nervous systems (ANS). The ANS controls the automatic regulation of breathing, body and skin temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, cerebral autoregulation, pupillary response to light, and more. CAMP is an international leader in the study of congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) and
rapid-onset obesity with hypothalamic dysfunction, hypoventilation and autonomic dysregulation (ROHHAD)

The candidate in this role will be a key member of our clinical team, assisting with comprehensive daytime and overnight evaluations of infants and children with disorders of respiratory control. During our comprehensive inpatient evaluations, we determine the most effective way to optimize a child’s ventilation and oxygenation needs with a variety of tracheostomy tube covers and ventilators (LTV, Trilogy, Astral, Vivo). The Autonomic Specialist collaborates with physicians, medical professionals, and families on a daily basis. The Autonomic Specialist will be responsible for communicating with patients, their families, and referring medical providers. The Autonomic Specialist will perform a variety of outpatient autonomic tests such as: Head-up-Tilt (HUT) testing, Thermoregulatory Sweat Test, Pupillometry, Peripheral Skin Temperature measurements, Heart Rate Deep Breathing, Valsalva Maneuvers, and QSWEAT testing.
Essential Job Functions:
  • Performs independently, multi-channel recording both awake and sleep with attention to detail on children: newborn through adolescent with a wide spectrum of disorders of respiratory control.
  • Performs all T3 physiologic home/hospital monitoring including teaching, scoring, billing, trouble-shooting and maintenance of all recordings.
  • Conducts parent/patient assessments, schedules and coordinates clinical visits, obtains necessary medical records and triages referrals.
  • Provides teaching to patients and/or parents prior to discharge following respiratory therapist scope of practice.
  • Performs the initial recognition, intervention and treatment of critical events that may occur during evaluation of critically ill patients seen in the respiratory physiology laboratories.
  • Provides educational opportunities by serving as a mentor and leader in clinical skills to maintain professional competence.
  • Partners with management on performance improvement/quality assurance activities for the Department of Autonomic Medicine, ensuring compliance with all hospital policies, Joint Commission and other regulatory standards.
  • Participates in developing and revising procedures, policies, protocols and standards of care.
  • Provides input to facilitate team-building concept among therapists, nurses and physicians.
  • Collaborates with all members of the team in identifying and participating in research projects.
  • Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Licensed by the State of Illinois as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
  • Completion of a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) in Respiratory Care.
  • 3 years pediatric or neonatal critical care experience and/or 5 years’ experience in Autonomic Medicine preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support Certification (BLS). PALS certification within the first year of employment.
  • Must be capable of performing and working knowledge of all respiratory equipment and therapies provided in Center for Autonomic Medicine in Pediatrics.
  • Good teaching and decision-making skills with a high degree of motivation and ability to work independently.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, organizational and assessment skills are imperative.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Suite applications.

Bachelor's Degree: Respiratory Therapy (Required)
Pay Range
$34.00-$55.59 Hourly
