ABOUT AMM:
The Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park (AMM) is a significant community asset serving Anne Arundel County and beyond. Through programs, exhibits, and community events, AMM educates youth and adults about the Annapolis area’s rich maritime heritage and the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay. Our mission, which profoundly impacts the community, is accomplished through an engaging suite of hands-on programming and by bringing visitors to our two campuses on Back Creek and aboard the Museum’s historic skipjack, Wilma Lee.
AMM is launching an outdoor-based, maritime-themed preschool program for children ages 3.5-5. This program utilizes AMM’s unique waterfront setting and new outdoor classroom to foster immersive, child-led learning experiences. The Early Childhood Program Director will develop and manage the program, including curriculum creation, staff oversight, and direct teaching. The Early Childhood Program Director will also be responsible for implementing other AMM programs targeting early learners, such as a caretaker and me, and summer camps.
Key Responsibilities:
· Program Development and Management:
o Design and implement an outdoor preschool program that is aligned with AMM’s mission and meets the regulatory requirements of the State of Maryland.
o Establish licensing compliance protocols, including documentation, staff training, and safety procedures.
o Develop a curriculum rooted in child-led, experiential, and place-based learning approaches.
o Manage program administration, including registration, health and safety policies, licensing, and family communication.
o Oversee program budget, expenditures, and materials.
· Teaching and Leadership:
o Serve as the lead teacher for the preschool program.
o Lead “caretaker and me” classes, summer camps, and preschool sessions.
o Foster a safe, inclusive, and engaging outdoor learning environment in all seasons.
o Mentor and evaluate teaching staff, facilitating professional development opportunities.
o Build relationships with families, partners, and the community through events and open communication.
o Plan and implement family activities such as community service days and seasonal celebrations.
· Collaboration and Reporting:
o Work with senior staff on strategic planning, marketing, advocacy, and growth initiatives.
o Provide program data, write grant content, and support marketing efforts.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
· Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education
· At least 3 years of experience in outdoor or forest school programs.
· Credentials to direct a licensed preschool or early learning program in Maryland or the commitment to obtain by June 2025.
· Certifications in First Aid and CPR.
· Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
· Knowledge of local ecology, with naturalist experience preferred.
· Physically able to work outdoors year-round and support children as needed.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office and social media platforms.
· Experience with emergent curriculum and nature-based education frameworks.
· Ability to balance administrative duties with direct teaching.
· Passion for nature and early childhood education.
· Flexible, collaborative, and resourceful.
· Patient, positive, and resilient in outdoor settings.
· Eager to inspire a love of nature and learning in young children.
