A Shipping and Receiving Clerk is responsible for coordinating and managing incoming and outgoing shipments in warehouses, distribution centers, or manufacturing facilities. This role ensures accurate inventory tracking, timely deliveries, and proper handling of materials while maintaining compliance with safety and operational standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Shipping Operations:
- Receive and label shipments according to company and carrier specifications.
- Verify and process shipping documents, including invoices, packing slips, and bills of lading.
- Coordinate with shipping carriers to schedule pickups and deliveries.
- Track shipments and provide updates to internal teams or customers as needed.
- Inspect and verify incoming shipments for damages and piece count.
- Unload, sort, and properly store received goods in designated locations.
- Report and document discrepancies, damages, or missing items to supervisors.
- Ensure all received goods are entered into inventory management systems accurately.
- Maintain accurate records of all shipments and inventory movements.
- Assist in conducting inventory counts and cycle audits.
- Ensure proper stock rotation and organization to optimize warehouse space.
- Other duties as assigned.
Quality Control & Compliance:

- Ensure that all shipments meet quality standards before dispatch.
- Follow company policies and safety procedures to prevent damage or loss of goods.
- Adhere to compliance regulations, including hazardous material handling (if applicable).
- Equipment & Documentation Management:
- Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, or other material-handling equipment as needed.
- Keep shipping and receiving areas clean and organized.
- Maintain records and generate reports related to shipping and receiving activities.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent (associate’s degree in logistics or supply chain preferred).
- 2-5 years of experience in shipping, receiving, or warehouse operations.
- Technical Skills:
- Familiarity with shipping software, inventory management systems, and barcode scanners.
- Ability to operate forklifts or other warehouse equipment (certification preferred).
- Soft Skills:
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Good communication and teamwork abilities.
Working Conditions:
- Warehouse or shipping dock environment, with exposure to varying temperatures and noise levels.
- May require lifting heavy packages, operating equipment, and standing for extended periods.
- Shift work may include nights, weekends, or holidays based on shipping schedules.
