POSITION SUMMARY:
The Public Safety Director is responsible for: 1) the development, implementation and management of the Campus Public Safety Department programs and services including, but not limited to security, environmental health and safety, fire safety, emergency management, parking management, key control and key-card access. 2) Compliance with all applicable state and federal laws, rules and regulations related to campus safety and the Jeanne Clery Act. 3) Ensuring that day-to-day security, public safety functions and new initiatives are aligned with the College’s Strategic Plan. The goal of this position is to maintain a safe environment for the college’s students, faculty and staff as well as all visitors to the college. Overall safety will be measured using both the Clery Crime statistics as well as the daily crime report. An additional outcome is to be transparent and compliant with local, state and federal crime reporting mandates.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead and manage Department of Public Safety, a 24/7-365 operation; including hiring, training, direction and supervision.
- Develop and maintain a working relationship with students, faculty and staff as well as those who reside in the Yellow Springs community.
- Develop and implement of comprehensive public safety programs, policies and procedures.
- Ensure Compliance with local, state and federal crime reporting mandates.
- Collaborate with local officials to address matters of mutual concern.
- Coordinate with internal/external emergency response protocols and/or agencies.
- Oversee continuous improvements in department services to meet or exceed internal and external customer expectations.
- Other tasks as assigned.
EQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of 5 years experience in law enforcement, security or Public Safety.
- Thorough knowledge of criminal justice, law enforcement and higher education protocols and procedures
- Thorough knowledge of the Jeanne Clery Act, Title IX and SOPP compliance and the Violence Against Women Act as well as the Campus SaVE Act.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, problem solving, organizational, written and communication skills.
- Strong background in emergency management, NIMS and CIT
- Understanding of and appreciation for current student issues or concerns.
- Maturity supported by a strong ethical character.
- Background in higher education public safety management preferred including personnel management, experience in administration of a comprehensive safety and security program, knowledge of laws and rules associated with local, state and federal policies.
- A current and valid State of Ohio driver’s license.
- Able to pass a criminal background check.
- Ability to relate to and interact with diverse populations.
- Ability to manage crisis situations.
- CPR/AED/First Aid Certified or ability to obtain within 90 days.
PHYSICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
- Ability to walk the entire campus as well as climbing stairs.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Proficient computer and software skills.
- Willingness to be on-call 24/7-365 for various events that may occur on or off campus.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS:
- Varied hours/schedule; typical office setting including multi-tasking, patrolling the campus and responding to calls for assistance.
- Inclement weather, confined spaces and large crowds.
- May come into contact with chemicals especially in the Arts and Science Building.
