Job Title:School Counselor
Location:Apache Junction High School
Work Calendar: 196 days
Reports to: Principal
Salary Range:$45,785 to $79,317 * *Salary based on education and experience
Job Goal: By utilizing leadership, advocacy and collaboration, school counselors promote student success, provide preventative services and respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that address academic, career and personal/social development for students.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree
- AZ Department of Education Counselor Certificate
- AZ IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
- Preferred 3 years of experience
Core Job Functions:
- Collects, organizes, and analyzes information about students through records, tests, interviews, and professional sources, to appraise their interests, aptitudes, abilities, and personality characteristics for educational and vocational planning
- Be knowledgeable of scholarships and their affiliated application processes
- Track academic progress toward graduation; counsel those at risk; seek admission to credit recovery programs when appropriate
- Coordinate graduation ceremony and associated activities
- Investigate, determine and assign consequences for conduct referrals, incident reports, and other inappropriate behavior by determining frequency, severity and policy. Contacts parents regarding questions and concerns
- Provide and support prevention programs including violence prevention, conflict resolution, anti-bullying strategies, peer mediation, and character education
- Work with staff to monitor student progress
- Counsel individuals, groups, parents, staff and community regarding concerns about family, friends, school and grades including determine how to problems solve
- Collaborate with and provide referrals to community agencies on behalf of students and families
- Provides crisis intervention as necessary
- As assigned, develop proactive programs to address prevention and behavioral issues
- Serves as a liaison between school and home for children with needs
- Performs staff development and parent education and training as necessary
- Maintain records of counseling
- Implements developmentally appropriate prevention-oriented group activities to meet students’ needs and school goals
- Incorporate into programs the life skills that students need to be successful in the twenty-first century
- Assist all students, individually or in groups, with the developing academic and personal/social skills, goals and plans
- Accurately and appropriately interprets and utilizes student data
- Collaborate with parents/guardians and educators to assist students with education and life planning
- Provide counseling to students with identified concerns and needs
- Implement an effective referral and follow up process as needed
- Accurately and appropriately use assessment procedures for determining and structuring counseling services
- Provide appropriate information to school personnel related to the comprehensive school counseling program
- Participate in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills and support training
- Member of RTI process on campus
- Develop and coordinate 504 plans
- Use available technology resources to enhance the school counseling program
- Adhere to laws, policies, procedures and ethical standards of the school counseling profession
- Collect and analyze date to guide program direction and emphasis
- Measure results of the comprehensive school counseling program activities and share results as appropriate with relevant stakeholders
- Monitor student academic performance, behavior and attendance and facilitate appropriate interventions
- Crisis team trained and available to assist when needed
- Coordinate State Testing at the site level along with administrators as needed
- Assist with discipline as needed
- Attend school activities
- Meet any additional specific job requirements as indicated by the District or school site
