The Blueprint (Role Profile)
The Tool and Die Maker is responsible for crafting tools and metal dies for stamping and forging operations. This position analyzes design specifications, cuts and shapes metals, assembles parts, and tests completed products for use in a manufacturing facility.
The Build (Responsibilities)
- Read and interpret blueprints, design schematics, and CAD drawings.
- Visualize and compute metal shapes and tolerances.
- Measure and mark metal stock for machining.
- Set up machine tools such as drills, lathes, grinders, and milling machines.
- Cut and shape blocks to specified dimensions.
- Fill, grind, and shim metals to ensure a smooth finish.
- Fit and assemble tools and die parts.
- Inspect finished dies and tools for defects, smoothness, and contour deformities.
- Conduct test runs with completed tools and dies.
- Adhere to company policies and procedures to produce a quality product, including reporting non-conforming materials.
- Report unusual conditions or questionable items to team lead or supervisor.
- Adhere to all safety rules and regulations.
- Keep work area clean and orderly.
- Maintain accurate records as required.
- Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned by team lead or supervisor.
The Toolbox (Qualifications)
- High school diploma or GED required; successful completion of an apprentice program with a licensed professional or established company preferred.
- 3 or more years' relevant work experience included CNC machine operation and programming.
- In-depth knowledge of machine tools.
- Able to read and interpret blueprints and design schematics.
- Extensive experience with metalworking tools including drills, milling machines, grinders, and lathes.
- Experience with quality control analysis.
- Advanced troubleshooting skills.
- Able to work overtime (more than 40 hours per week and Saturdays) as required.
- Stand and perform repetitive work for 8 hours.
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Work in a high temperature environment.
- Climb stairs and ladders.
