What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Cost Estimator position at APL Manufacturing?
The Senior Cost Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for sheet-metal fabrication projects. This includes analyzing project specifications, reviewing blueprints, calculating material and labor costs, and providing detailed proposals for customer RFQs (Request for Quotations). The role requires a strong understanding of sheet-metal fabrication processes, materials, and industry standards.
Estimating & Quotation Preparation :
1. Analyze customer RFQs, specifications, and blueprints to determine project requirements.
2. Prepare accurate cost estimates, including materials, labor, tooling, and overhead.
3. Develop detailed and competitive pricing proposals for customers.
Material and Labor Cost Analysis :
4. Identify and source required materials, ensuring cost efficiency.
5. Calculate labor hours based on project complexity and production processes.
Project Review :
6. Collaborate with engineering and production teams to assess project feasibility.
7. Recommend cost-saving measures and process improvements.
Customer Interaction :
8. Liaise with customers to clarify requirements, answer questions, and provide revisions as necessary.
9. Address technical and pricing inquiries during the quotation process.
Data Management :
10. Maintain accurate records of estimates, quotes, and project documentation.
11. Update and manage cost databases, including material and labor rates.
Bid Management :
12. Review bid documents and ensure timely submission of proposals.
13. Monitor bid results and maintain a record of win / loss ratios for continuous improvement.
Process Improvement :
14. Identify and recommend enhancements to estimation tools and processes to increase accuracy and efficiency.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Minimum of 4-5 years of experience in sheet-metal fabrication, estimating, or related roles.
- Familiarity with prototypes and production sheet-metal projects is a must.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, or a related field is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of sheet-metal fabrication processes, including laser cutting, bending, welding, and finishing is preferred.
- Familiarity with ERP or estimating software (e.g., JobBoss) is a plus
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and time-management skills.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for customer interactions.
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy.
