Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree or equivalent experience with four (4) years of progressive compliance-related experience within a complex institutional environment
- Knowledge of the aspects of an effective compliance program and how it is implemented in an institution of higher education in conjunction with Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
- Ability to formulate broad policy recommendations, demonstrated ability in creating effective and comprehensive policies and with assisting managers/leaders with writing and amending policies and guidance documentation.
- Demonstrated history of self-motivation, initiative, and strong time management skills to manage multiple projects and priorities within established timelines.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
- Professional-level organizational, facilitation, written and verbal communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, and presentation skills.
License/Certification Required
Current/valid compliance certification (e.g. CCEP, CHC) or willingness to obtain
Preferred Qualifications
- Juris Doctorate or Master’s Degree

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Within Appalachian State University’s Division of Institutional Integrity, the Office of Compliance and Ethics operates to administer a university-wide program that fosters a culture of compliance awareness, adherence, and collaboration. Reporting to the Chief Compliance and Ethics Officer, the Assistant Director of Compliance and Ethics will work to ensure that the University’s compliance efforts are consistent with the applicable Federal, State, and Local laws, regulations, and policies. The position will assist in the maintenance, management, administration, and work to continuously improve the University Compliance program.

- Foster open communication, establish effective working relationships, and build credibility with members of the University community to promote a culture of compliance and ethics and to instill a sense of shared accountability for compliance.
- Serve as a trusted resource for compliance-related information, guidance, and support; advise and educate compliance partners throughout the University and serve as a catalyst for the achievement of best practices in compliance subject matter areas.
- Perform and oversee the performance of compliance review activities to determine if University-wide compliance efforts are in alignment with applicable policies, procedures, laws/regulations; provide constructive feedback on, and recommendations and guidance for improving compliance efforts.
- Design/develop and facilitate compliance and ethics program training/education sessions and educational materials for faculty and staff, and periodically analyze and refresh compliance and ethics-related training and education materials.
- Develop and lead a communication strategy to promote compliance and ethics awareness, including website development and maintenance.
- Lead and/or participate in various University committees and ad-hoc working groups related to compliance and ethics matters, including the Compliance Partners Working Group.
- Maintain a working understanding of the higher education compliance landscape and stay abreast of changes in federal, state, and local regulations that impact institutions of higher education; and develop recommendations and partner with University management/leadership to timely address required changes to University policies and training and education programs.
- Communicate proactively and regularly with the Chief Compliance and Ethics Officer regarding compliance program matters and significant risks.
- Serve as backup for and support to other Compliance team roles.
- Pursue professional development opportunities, including external and internal training and professional association memberships, and share information gained with co-workers.
- Perform other related duties as required or directed by the Chief Compliance and Ethics Officer.
