What are the responsibilities and job description for the Portfolio Manager (Leveraged Loans) position at Applied Risk Capital?
Applied Risk Capital (“ARC”) is an underwriting platform focused on protecting banks and credit funds against loss of principal on leveraged finance loans. ARC works with a panel of A or higher rated insurance companies to provide this protection through a non-payment insurance policy.
ARC operates as a Managing General Underwriter (“MGU”) on behalf of its carrier panel. In this capacity, ARC identifies suitable non-payment insurance opportunities in the market through interaction with banks, direct lenders and brokers; conducts full due diligence based on syndicate-level information; prepares detailed underwriting memos; issues policies on behalf of its carriers; and invoices, collects and remits premiums. It also monitors portfolio performance and provides its carriers with assistance regarding any amendments, waivers or restructuring activity within the portfolio.
ARC’s focus on leverage finance includes several different loan products, including revolving credit facilities, delayed draw term loans, term loans, derivatives, and letters of credit. ARC underwrites both single-name and portfolio exposures. ARC’s capacity is currently $50 million per obligor, making it among the largest non-payment insurers in the leveraged finance market.
ARC’s addressable market exceeds $5 trillion. ARC has been growing quickly and now employs 13 people. ARC expects to employ 17 people by the end of 2025.
ARC was founded in 2019 by Andrew Shapiro. Andrew worked for more than 30 years as a senior banker, holding several key leadership positions at BNP Paribas, including global head of loan syndications, Americas head of the restructuring and Americas head of corporate loan and bond origination. Andrew founded ARC to fill a much-needed gap between the banking and non-payment insurance sectors – applying sophisticated bank credit underwriting techniques and expertise to underwrite corporate and sponsor-driven leveraged finance credit risk on behalf of its insurer panel.
