What are the responsibilities and job description for the Montessori Primary Assistant - French Speaking position at Arc en Ciel Montessori French Immersion School?
This position is for a 7:45-3:45 shift Monday - Friday, starting pay is $21.68 per hour. This position works along side an established team of an AMI trained lead guide and additional francophone assistant in a classroom of Primary aged ( 3-6 year olds). For this role we have a strong preference for Native french speakers.
SUMMARY: The Montessori Assistant Teacher will work directly with the Lead Montessori Guide and will assist in establishing and maintaining a harmonious classroom. Assistant teachers will collaborate with the Lead Montessori Teacher to prepare and maintain an orderly, attractive, and joyful environment. They provide another pair of observant, attentive eyes and ears to the classroom. Assistant Teachers are also crucial in modeling courteous and respectful behavior as well as contributing to the warm, supportive, and calm atmosphere that is the hallmark of an authentic Montessori environment. French Speaking assistants will also provide an immersive French Language experience for the students in their class.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES
Preparation of the Environment
- Assist in preparing the classroom environment during the week prior to the beginning of the school year and maintain these standards throughout the year in accordance with the Montessori training of the Lead Guide
- Maintain the materials in accordance to the principles of order, beauty, and simplicity. This may include washing dishes, repair of materials and daily cleaning tasks
- Arrive in time to assist in preparing the environment for the day. Complete a specified list of duties at the beginning, middle, and the end of each day.
- Assist in the creation of classroom materials and in translating them to French
- Assist in establishing and maintaining the Montessori classroom culture, paying particular attention to the needs of the students.
- Prepare and maintain the environment, observe behaviors, model grace, and courtesy, preserve and protect lessons, and assist in the development of independence.
- Monitor the environment to make sure students aren’t overwhelmed and anxious.
- Engage students within the classroom by interacting and thinking about what is happening around them.
- Clean-up of the classroom by ensuring that it is always tidy.
Guide Support
- Help Guide to establish a classroom culture of calm, productive work. Supervise the classroom as necessary. Work with individual children or small groups as directed by the Guide.
- Provide behavioral guidance to children in a manner that is firm but respectful. Implement behavior management strategies and plans
- Assist with escorting children to the bathroom, in finding clean clothing, and to assist in changing as needed
- Be a model of integrity, curiosity, responsibility, creativity, and respect for all persons
- Respect racial, cultural, and gender diversity within the community
- Carefully observes and keeps records on each student’s individual progression through the classroom, always being available to offer gentle guidance.
- Assist individual students in performing activities initiated by the Guides in a small group or 1:1 setting.
- Repeat what the teacher said and re-explain each step of a lesson as needed.
- Supervise children in the hall, bathroom, and outdoor and indoor play areas.
- Inform the lead guide of any classroom difficulties including discipline, health, equipment needs, repair, and maintenance.
- Assist in the preparation/production of instructional materials.
- Work with the Guide to develop classroom schedules, and modify materials.
- Meet regularly with the lead Guide to discuss goals for the class and individual students.
- Share all information from parents with the lead guide.
- Help to uphold the integrity of the school to home communication channels by only sharing general information and directing parents to reach out to the the classroom lead guide with questions on policy or behaviors.
French Language Use
- Speak in French with students 75 to 85% of the time and speak in French with French-speaking staff members to create a culture of immersion within the environment.
- Lead the class in learning new French songs, stories, poetry, and vocabulary
- Collaborate with colleagues to create and deliver lesson plans for formal afternoon French lessons twice per week.
- Collaborate with Lead Guide to mirror Montessori lessons, games, and activities in French.

Student Supervision and Boundaries
- All assistants have a thorough understanding of licensing requirements and ratio expectations for the age group in which they work
- All assistants work towards establishing developmentally appropriate and safe physical and emotional boundaries with students within the context of a Montessori setting.
Continuing Education & Professional Growth:
- Completes 18-20 hours of documented, relevant professional development each calendar year. Including at least 1 class on ABAR and 1 class on Gender Inclusivity per year.
