Summary:
Oversees all swimming activities that occur at swimming pool at Camp Rainbow. This person will supervise lifeguards and other required staff during swimming activities and implement the camp safety plan.
Essential Functions:
- Supervises pool activities.
- Supervise pool lifeguards and other staff during swimming activities.
- Enforce pool rules and regulations and maintain order.
- Notify supervisor of any faulty equipment or unsafe conditions
- Teach pool activities and games.
- Teach and implement the buddy system.
- Respond to and report any medical problems or incidents to Camp Nurse and Camp Director
- Enforce Safety procedures in pool area.
- Maintain certifications required by the Department of Health.
- Any other duties as assigned by Camp Director.
Non-Essential Functions:
- Participates in corporate compliance and quality assurance activities as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Must be able to maintain composure under pressure
- Experience with children with or without developmental disabilities is preferred.
- Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to relate to and interact appropriately with adults and children with different background and abilities
- Strong organizational skills; makes efficient use of time and energy
- Ability to comprehend and follow instructions and required procedures
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift 50lbs
- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity
- Ability to physically assist campers with mobility impairment
- Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers
Working Conditions:
Camp environment, partially indoors/outdoors, pool setting - prolonged periods of being outdoors.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Have a minimum of:
one season of previous experience as a camp aquatics director at a New York State children’s camp;
Or two seasons of previous experience consisting of at least 12 weeks as a children’s camp lifeguard which had more than one lifeguard supervising it at a time;
Or 18 weeks of previous experience as a lifeguard at a swimming pool or bathing beach, which had more than one lifeguard supervising it at a time.
- Hold an accepted and current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate acceptable by Health Department Regulations.
- Possess current certification in a training course for Lifeguard Supervision and Management acceptable by Health Department Regulations.
- High school diploma or equivalent. Valid NYS Driver’ license with acceptable driving history, per agency policy.
