A Pre-Press Specialist is responsible for preparing digital files for printing. This role involves a deep understanding of graphic design principles, file formats, color management, and printing processes. The specialist ensures that the final printed product meets the highest quality standards.

Essential Functions:
- File Preparation:
- Convert files to appropriate formats (e.g., PDF, TIFF, JPEG)
- Check for image quality, typography, and layout errors
- Set up customer files to print correctly
- Send email proofs to customers for approval
- Set up digital printers for printing
- Quality Assurance:
- Examine job orders to determine details such as quantities to be printed, production times, stock specifications, colors
- Review files for accuracy and consistency
- Compare proofs to original designs
- Identify and correct any errors or discrepancies
- Inspect and examine printed products for print clarity, color accuracy, conformance to specifications, and external defects
- Machine Setup:
- Assist in setting up printing presses or other equipment
- Verify press settings and adjustments
- Technical Support:
- Provide technical assistance to designers and customers
- Troubleshoot file issues and printing problems
- Remove printed materials from presses and transport them to finishing areas
- Cut documents to necessary size for bindery to finish
- Resolve problems and recommend process improvements
- Provide excellent customer service
- Attend necessary agency training
- Assist in other areas of our daily operations as needed
- Serving on Agency committees
- Participation in Agency events
- Participation in outside training
- Reports to: Graphics Manager
- Graphic design experience a plus
- Some familiarity with print shop production/finishing equipment
- Attention to detail a must
- Self-motivated and ability to learn
- Must be proficient with Adobe suite programs (inDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat, Photoshop) to setup files supplied by customers to print properly on digital presses.
- Experience in printing layouts (i.e. book spreads, imposing, etc.)
- Mechanical aptitude
- Measuring and mathematical skills necessary

- Able to plan and schedule production to meet customer needs

- Ability to stand for extended periods of time. Ability to sit, stand, stoop, push and pull.
- Ability to lift and push up to 50 pounds
- Will be required to use various department equipment, including, but not limited to: pallet jack, hand truck, digital printing presses, cutter, folder, hole punch etc., in addition to standard office equipment.
- Typical printshop facility and typical office environment.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Valid NYS driver’s license with a safe driving record per agency policy
- Five years in a production setting
