Position Summary
The Director of Muriel Humphrey Child Care Center (MHCC) will oversee and maintain overall organization and services for MHCC, families and staff.

Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement policies and objectives of the Program in cooperation with the Board of Directors, including the Executive Director and the Assistant Executive Director.
- Maintain a healthy and safe atmosphere for the children in the child care center.
- Assist with the preparation and implementation of a budget, which includes, personnel, equipment, supplies, and training.
- Develop and execute an on-going program of activities which contributes to the care, growth and development of the children at the child care center and of each child as an individual.
- Responsible for the hiring and retention of staff. This is to include maintaining progressive disciplinary policies and procedures and the termination of staff.
- Provide or make in-service trainings available for staff.
- Make written evaluations of staff members once a year and discuss individually with each employee.
- Work with parents and children to develop effective relationships.
- Maintain knowledge of first aid.
- Supervise general condition and upkeep of the building and grounds.
- Maintain a system of records (in accordance with the State Child Day Center Licensing Procedures) for financial and statistical purposes.
- Evaluate facilities, resources, teaching and support personnel, and make recommendations or decisions about promotions, salaries and dismissals.
- Work with the community to establish a relationship, which will aid in the successful implementation of goals and objectives for the center.
- Working with the teachers to devise a progress report on each child to be given to the parents twice a year.
- Work with the kitchen staff on menus and maintain standards of food service in accordance with the health department.
- Attend seminars, and trainings and/or conferences in order to keep up to date on developments in the field of childcare and in aid to in-service training.
- Serve as a mentor and model to the staff on professional conduct, including confidentiality, best practice, and quality service to children and families.
- Shall have knowledge of the groups of children being served and skills specific to the special needs of the children in care including, but not limited to; functional abilities, accommodation, and assessment techniques, behavior management, and medical and health concerns.
- Work with parents including:
- Interviewing each parent who enrolls a child in the center.
- Being available for telephone or personal parent conferences when necessary.
- Planning and attending parent meetings
Supervisory Responsibilities:
All MHCC Childcare staff report to this position.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Must be comfortable supporting individuals with disabilities.
- Must have a valid Virginia Driver's License and meet agency insurance driving record requirements.
- Ability to pass criminal background checks.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Must be able to carry up to 50 pounds.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Self-starter with a proactive attitude.
- Ability to organize and manage multiple tasks.
- Must have a professional demeanor and ability to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Must maintain CPR and First Aid certification
Educational Qualifications:
Program directors shall be at least 21 years of age and shall meet one of the following:
1. A graduate degree in a child-related field such as elementary education, nursing, or recreation from a college or university and six months of programmatic experience; OR
2. An endorsement or bachelor's degree in a child-related field such as elementary education, nursing, or recreation from a college or university and one year of programmatic experience; OR
3. Forty-eight semester hours or 72 quarter hours of college credit from a college or university of which 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours are in child-related subjects and one year of programmatic experience; OR
4. Two years of programmatic experience with one year in a staff supervisory capacity and at least one of the following education backgrounds:
a. A one-year early childhood certificate from a college or university that consists of at least 30 semester hours;
b. A child development credential that requires:
(1) High school program completion or the equivalent;
(2) 480 hours working with children in a group which could include a supervised practicum;
(3) Determination of competency in promoting children's development, providing a safe and healthy environment, managing the classroom environment or childhood program, and promoting positive and productive relationships with parents or guardians; and
(4) At least 120 hours of child-related training taught by an individual or by an organization with expertise in early childhood teacher preparation provided that the training facilitator:
(a) Documents the student's mastery and competence;
(b) Observes the student's application of competence in a classroom setting;
(c) Has a combination of at least six years of education (leading to a degree or credential in a child-related field) or programmatic experience; and
(d) Has at least 12 semester hours or 180 hours in a child-related field, a child development credential or equivalent, and two years of programmatic experience with one year in a staff supervisory capacity; or
c. A certification of qualification from an internationally or nationally recognized Montessori organization.
B. Program directors without management experience shall have one college course in a business-related field, 10 hours of management training, or one child care management course that satisfactorily covers the management functions of:
1. Planning;
2. Budgeting;
3. Staffing; and
4. Monitoring.
Management experience is defined as at least six months of on-the-job training in an administrative position that requires supervising, orienting, training, and scheduling staff.
C. For program directors of therapeutic child day programs and special needs child day programs, education and programmatic experience shall be in the group care of children with special needs.
