Electronics Technician I
Description/Job Summary
The Electronics Technician I and II is accountable to the Range Communications Systems Work Group Lead (WGL) for the overall support of in-scope work in WBS 160. This includes providing technical support to ensure timely completion of work while meeting or exceeding quality standards. This position receives technical guidance from the WGL, senior coworkers such as the Field Service Engineer and Electronics Tech III. Work is reviewed for compliance with accepted practices.
Responsibilities/Duties
Configure, operate and maintain Range Radio Frequency (RF), digital voice communications systems and associated equipment in support of the Dryden Aeronautical Tracking Range (DATR) at the NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center.
In the event of system failure, perform methodical troubleshooting using a variety of calibrated test equipment and software tools. Understand system signal flow, and use RF, electronics, and software knowledge to identify failed equipment to the component level. Accurately document preventative and corrective maintenance activities as required by quality standards. Electronics Technician I will assist with maintenance, usually under the direction of a higher-level technician.
Assist Field Service Engineers with the design, development, fabrication, installation and testing of hardware and software system modifications and upgrades.
Required Skills
- Thorough understanding of electronics fundamentals to include operation and identification of active and passive components like resistors, capacitors, inductors, diodes, transistors, relays, and transformers.
- Thorough understanding of RF fundamentals and theory, frequency, amplitude, and phase modulation, multi-path, refraction, and Doppler. Familiarity with RF components like mixers, amplifiers, dividers, couplers, and filters.
- Ability to configure and operate computers running Windows and Linux based operating systems. Knowledge of common business applications like Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, and Visio.
- Ability to clearly communicate system status and performance in writing and over voice-networks with teammates and customers in the English language.
- Ability to successfully complete the NASA soldering course.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Government Secret Security Clearance
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
Preferred Skills
Perform other related duties as required by management to include supporting other work centers during surges. This may include cross training into other functional areas to meet overall contract performance objectives. Assist with general housekeeping of the work area. May be required to support safety, environmental and tower climbing activities.
Required Experience
ElectronicsTechnician I: no experience required, one year or more is desirable.
Required Education
ElectronicsTechnician I will have some formal education in a relevant field and have demonstrated technical abilities. This can include standard industry certifications.
Work Environment, Physical and Mental Demands
Range environment with work at remote locations, prolonged sitting while using the computer and the telephone, constant use of sight abilities, constant use of speech/hearing abilities for communication, constant mental alertness. Ability to work extended and flexible hours including some nights and weekends. Ability to pass a heavy equipment physical exam required to operate motorized equipment such as fork-lifts, bucket lifts and platform personnel lifts. Ability to lift a minimum of 25 lbs. Ability to climb stairs and ladders. Work location is in a desert environment, and employees are in contact with various desert wildlife. Occasional travel is required.
