ABOUT DADS’ CLUB
The mission of the Shrine Catholic Grade School and Academy (SCGSA) Dad’s Club is to provide every child in the parish the opportunity to play in an organized sports program, which operates in a supportive and supplemental role to the primary function of Christian development. The Dads’ Club is proud to provide the funding and administration for all parish student athletic programs through the 8th Grade level and aligns its programs with the Archdiocese’s Catholic Youth Organization (CYO).
Additionally, the Dads’ Club is integrally involved in many other parish and school activities, capital improvements, fundraising and events.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Athletic Director (AD) will be responsible for organizing and managing the athletic programs and serve as the Parish liaison with the CYO office. This leader will report on all sports programs within scope to the SCGSA Dads’ Club Board and membership at the monthly meetings. (Attendance at meetings is expected) You will work with the Parish and School administration to schedule facilities and events that pertain to sports programs.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The AD will serve as the primary administrator of the Shrine CYO Website in accordance with the policies detailed in the Shrine CYO Athletic Handbook. Specific responsibilities of the AD will include, but not be limited to:
Sports Programs Management:
  • Registration of players and team formation for Fall, Winter, Spring, and tournament sports
  • Confirmation of athletic eligibility, including collection health certificates, parental consent forms and student athlete contracts
  • Encouragement to include Shrine Parish and School parents in the mission of athletic and faith development.
  • Registration of teams with the CYO, attending the preseason CYO meetings on behalf of Shrine
  • Coordination, compilation, and approval of team rosters and all required CYO forms
  • Scheduling and attending all games and practices, organization and scheduling of all seasonal tournaments
  • Securing necessary facilities at high school, grade school, city, or elsewhere to support activities
  • Selection and assignment of coaches using CYO guidelines and ensuring the rectory required background checks, attendance in Protecting God’s Children as well as any additional requirements set forth by the Archdiocese of Detroit or the Shrine Rectory
  • Administering a formal feedback system, to assess and evaluate the coach's performance vs. expectations, to facilitate continued improvement of the program
  • Serving as an advisor to coaches in disciplinary situations and intervening when appropriate
  • Working with coaches for the distribution of uniforms and equipment at the beginning of each season as well as the return of uniforms and equipment at the end of the season
  • Organize parent representatives/volunteers for home sporting events
  • Coordinate officials to ensure coverage at all home events
Other:
  • Working together with the SCGSA Dads’ Club Treasurer to prepare a budget for the upcoming Athletic year, to be presented to the Dad's Club Board for approval.
  • Be a school presence in both the GS and Academy through the week and communicate with the HS Athletic Director.
BACKGROUND & EXPERIENCE
The ideal candidate has worked in a parish or school setting with a focus on running athletics programs. Suitable alternative experience includes coaching, physical education and/or teaching.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Education or Business Administration
  • 5 years of experience in a similar position
  • Coaching experience/coordination of athletic events
  • A valid Michigan Driver’s License
  • Versed in Microsoft Office tools suite with effective financial skills
  • A “can do” attitude, highly organized with attention to detail
  • Must be energetic problem solver who can multitask and prioritize workload
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, an effective presenter
  • Ability to understand the needs of parents, coaches, and student athletes
  • Superior conflict resolution skills
  • Travel required, approximately 25% within driving distance and often on Saturdays
  • Must meet all requirements established by the Archdiocese of Detroit for employment
  • Must have completed or be willing to complete “Protecting God’s Children” training
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to Head of Schools of National Shrine of the Little Flower Shrine Basilica. Works closely with SCGSA Dads’ Club, High School Athletics Director and High School, Grade School and Parish Administrations.
