What are the responsibilities and job description for the TEACHER ASSISTANT/DRIVER position at Area Cooperative Educational Services?

Employment Status: 10- month position
Performance expectations and responsibilities:
It is the expectation and responsibility of ACES Teacher Assistant/Drivers to model the ACES Beliefs.
INSTRUCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Instruction
- Provides oral and written feedback on classroom activities and lessons
- Assists teacher in maintaining an objective, ongoing assessment of learner progress
- Assists in assessing student progress with behavior management system
- Conducts, under supervision, individual and small group instruction in a variety of settings for assigned students
- Assists in appropriate student communication and social skill development
- Assists in the reinforcement of classroom therapeutic goals when assigned
- Supports instruction with assistive and adaptive instructional technology
Knowledge
- Is able to support the teacher in large and small group instruction in a variety of settings
- Maintains a current knowledge of each students special circumstances and needs as appropriate to the activity
- Participates in content area training
- Participates in behavior management training for large and small group instruction
- Achieves proficient skill in the use of technology as an instructional tool in the classroom
Learning Climate
- Assists teacher in maintaining an environment conducive to learning
- Fosters a sense of self worth and independence in students
- Maintains a clean and orderly work environment
Classroom Environment
- Assists in maintaining routine classroom procedures and preparation of materials as assigned
- Assists with student supervision and/or feeding during lunch
- Assists in student movement (including lifting) and maintains a knowledge of the proper technique for each student within assigned group
- Charts student progress as required by the teacher
- Keeps current all required forms and documents
NON-INSTRUCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Environmental Strategies
- Assists in maintaining safety and general welfare of assigned students
- Maintains confidentiality of student performances and records as prescribed by State and Federal law and ACES policies and procedures
- Assists in toileting and bathroom supervision where necessary
Communication
- Cooperates with all ACES personnel and consultants who provide input or services to students
- Notifies the principal and transportation coordinator of an absence due to illness in a timely manner
- Implements or assists with established behavior management system
Team Responsibilities
- Participates in staff meetings as required
- Participates in activities for self-growth, evaluation and on-going professional improvement
Transportation Knowledge
- Has knowledge of relevant CT laws and regulations
- Is familiar with the transportation and equipment needs of special needs students
- Has knowledge of emergency and accident procedures as referenced in driver handbook
Transportation Responsibilities
- Completes all required training courses in a timely manner
- Maintains current license and physical examination requirements
- Demonstrates safe driving practices
- Reports all student behavior problems occurring during transportation to Principal in a timely manner
- Assists parents/guardians and/or staff in loading and unloading of students
- Establishes and maintains a professional, courteous relationship with the student and family members
- Maintains a safe environment for students
- Reports all accidents immediately to the Transportation Department and completes appropriate forms to be submitted to Human Resources office within 24 hours
- Reports all mechanical problems to the Transportation Department in a timely manner
- Maintains security for the radio and assigned credit card or speed pass
- Completes and hands in pre-trip forms daily
- Maintains a clean vehicle interior and exterior
- Assures appropriate equipment remains in the vehicle (snow brush, fire extinguisher, first aid kit)
- Maintains appropriate radio transmissions and communications
- Maintains the established behavior management system while transporting students
- Adheres to practices/policies as outlined by the Transportation Coordinator
- Refrain from use of cell phones, except in case of emergencies when radios are not working
The successful candidate will have occasional assignments at ACES @ Ansonia Middle School.
Qualifications:
High school diploma required, college degree preferred
Experience working with students/special needs students desirable
Required CT drivers license with appropriate endorsements
