The database administrator (DBA) will be responsible for the development, administration, maintenance, patching, and documentation of databases to support mission requirements for the 61st Communications Squadron (61 CS) at Los Angeles Air Force Base. The DBA will ensure database systems meet operational needs, comply with security requirements, and maintain performance and availability standards.
The DBA will support databases within the LA AFB infrastructure, administer and modify MS SQL and Oracle databases, and ensure compliance with security policies, including DoD and Air Force cybersecurity standards. They will maintain development documentation and source code within the LAAFB Electronic Information Systems (EIS), perform regular backups, ensure data recovery capabilities, and monitor and optimize database performance for high availability.
In addition to database maintenance, the DBA will ensure compliance with the DoD Risk Management Framework (RMF), implement and track cybersecurity directives such as Time Compliance Network Orders (TCNOs) and Cyber Tasking Orders (CTOs), and work with the 61 CS Cybersecurity Team to maintain security policies and updates. They will also be responsible for responding to and resolving database-related issues and service requests in accordance with IT service management (ITSM) standards, conducting root cause analysis for performance issues, and implementing corrective actions.
Collaboration will be key in this role, as the DBA will work alongside government personnel and contractors within 61 CS to ensure seamless database operations. They will provide database support for key LAAFB applications, coordinate with system administrators and network engineers for database connectivity and security, and contribute to overall IT support efforts.
Candidates must have an active Secret Clearance and a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field, or equivalent experience. A minimum of five years of experience in database administration with MS SQL Server and Oracle is required. The role also demands proficiency in SQL development, database tuning, troubleshooting, and optimization, along with experience in database security policies and compliance with DoD 8140, RMF, and STIGs. Candidates should also be familiar with database backup and disaster recovery solutions, scripting languages such as PowerShell or Python, and IT service management principles using ticketing systems like Remedy or ServiceNow.
Preferred qualifications include certifications such as Microsoft Certified : Azure Database Administrator Associate, Oracle Database Administrator Certified Professional, or DoD 8570 IAT Level II certification (e.g., Security ). Experience working within U.S. Air Force or DoD IT environments, as well as knowledge of cloud database solutions like AWS RDS, Azure SQL, or Oracle Cloud, is a plus.
The position is primarily on-site at LAAFB in El Segundo, California, with work required during core business hours from 0700 to 1600 PT. On-call support may be required for mission-critical database incidents, and limited telework options may be available upon approval.
