What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Content, OKP position at Areya Media?
The Director of Content is pivotal to Okayplayer’s mission of creating bold, original and compelling content for our audience. This role requires the ability to not only think about how to engage and grow our passionate community, but also how to strategically expand Okayplayer’s offerings across our website, social media platforms, newsletters and new editorial ventures. The DOC must be able to navigate the twin tasks of elevating our editorial offerings and maximizing revenue opportunities.
The Director of Content is responsible for the creation and management of an editorial team as well as the prerequisite structures and systems that result in the output of consistently high-quality content in various forms daily - including but not limited to articles, video and audio. The DOC is key to ensuring that Okayplayer’s editorial, social media and OkayPlayerStudio teams are integrated, collaborative and high performing.
The DOC’s responsibilities also include:
- Develop and implement a quarterly comprehensive content strategy to drive audience growth and engagement, brand awareness plus cultivation of revenue opportunities.
- Develop new monetizable editorial tent poles to engage new audiences.
- Work closely with the Okayplayer Social Media Director to shape and oversee the execution of their social media strategy; with an eye toward operational efficiency and growth through conversion, retention, and engagement.
- Lead the implementation of Okayplayer’s editorial style guide to ensure our content across all platforms is always in line with our editorial standards and practices.
- Build a monthly editorial budget while always ensuring cost discipline.
- Directly managing the editorial team to meet company goals as well as individual team members’ professional growth and development.
- Work closely with our Audience Development Director to optimize SEO and video content monetization across all platforms.
- Work closely with our Head of Studios to scale up original video content offerings for distribution across the various Okayplayer platforms.
The Director of Content should be an in-depth expert in brand culture, social trends, and Black culture overall. They should have the following skills, education and experience.
- A critical thinker, who can interpret trends and who has copywriting skills with a “can do” results-oriented mentality.
- 6 years of leadership experience in a content and editorial media marketing role. Brand side experience preferred.
- Must have a deep level and be fluent in the nuances present across all key social platforms, including paid media, best practices, promotional campaigns, and ad opportunities.
- Knowledge of data driven social CMS and analytical tools like Google Analytics, Sprout Social, SimplyMeasured etc.
- In-depth knowledge of SEO and web traffic metrics.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills: High level of ownership, accountability and willingness to roll up sleeves and push content through various production systems.
- Deep knowledge of the Okayplayer voice and brand, as well as a passion for music, social justice, art, film, news, comedy and tech (particularly online communities and the web).
