Optometric Assistant

ACHC is a Federally Qualified Health Center and licensed primary care clinic. We provide Family Medicine and Dental Care, with additional specialists in Behavioral Health, Chiropractic, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Podiatry and Optometry. ACHC Clinics are located across Fresno, Kings and Tulare counties.

SUMMARY: 

The Optometric Assistant is responsible for processing patient’s personal and exam information through the electronic health record system,

pre-testing and special testing patients,  help maintain the examination and pre-testing area, and is directly responsible for providing quality internal and external customer service.


JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Process patient’s personal and exam information in the organization’s electronic health record.
  • Manage patient flow, and effectively communicate with team members and providers.
  • Uncover and prepare exam equipment in the morning and turn off and cover equipment at the end of the day.
  • Obtain and update patient’s ocular, medical, and family histories and examination data.
  • Check the condition of patients' eyes by assessing pupils, intraocular pressure, binocular status, extra ocular muscle function, visual acuity, peripheral vision, color vision, and corneal pachymetry and blood pressure when indicated.
  • Prepare patients for examination by dilating pupils; reporting patient history summary, changes in visual acuity, elevated extra ocular pressure, or blood pressure to Optometrist.
  • Assist the Optometrist as may be required. Conduct pre-testing and special testing for the following equipment and instruments:
  • Pre-testing I – auto refraction, lensometry, and tonometry.
  • Pre-testing II – preliminary chief complaint and/or history of present illness, and ocular, medical, and family histories, visual acuities, set phoropter with auto-refractor values, color vision assessment, and eye drop instillation when indicated.
  • Special testing – visual fields, pachymetry, ocular photography.
  • Counsel patients by transmitting doctor's orders, reviewing medication use, and reviewing contact lenses instructions.
  • Adhere to HIPAA rules and regulations.
  • Keep equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; performing preventive maintenance; and arranging for repairs.
  • Clean equipment between patients and disinfect all contact surfaces after contact with potentially infectious patients.
  • Keep work area appearance, products, and equipment clean, attractive, and organized.
  • Order supplies as needed.
  • Cooperate and assist in training fellow employees and share information to promote high-quality patient care and optometry operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications


 SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must be bilingual in English/Spanish
  • Flexibility/ability to work any open clinic hours.
  • Ability and work and thrive in a fast-paced environment and adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Attention to detail with the ability to prioritize and execute tasks efficiently.
  • Strong knowledge of optical procedures, terminology, and equipment
  • Familiarity with front desk operations including appointment scheduling and insurance verification
  • Ability to prioritize and perform functions with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with patients and colleagues, including, but not limited to in-person, telephone, and email.
  • Must be able to relate to the public regardless of ethnic, religion, and economic status. Treat all patients with dignity and respect.
  • Adhere to ACHC’s  professional standards, policies and procedures, and federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Strong ethics and a high level of personal and professional integrity.
  • Adhere to HIPAA rules and regulations.
  • Travel independently between sites when needed.
  • Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and other computer-based platforms.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate from high school, or equivalent.
  • Valid Optometric Technician Certification, preferred
  • 2 years prior experience as Optometry Technician preferred
  • Prior experience working with electronic health record systems preferred

Work Environment: Regularly required to sit for prolonged periods of time, talk, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and use hands to operate a standard computer keyboard. The employee occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 25 pounds. The employee may be required to utilize a personal vehicle to travel between clinics.

Hearing:         Adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone.

Speaking:       Must be able to communicate clearly with employees, patients and the community in person and over the telephone.

Vision:            Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including reading information from printed sources and computer screens.

Cognitive:      Aptitude to complete tasks, including abilities such as learning, remembering, focusing, categorizing, and integrating information for decision making, problem-solving, and comprehending.
