Job Summary

This position, which reports to the Laboratory Assistant Bureau Chief, plans, directs, and coordinates all activities within the Office of Chemistry. The Office Chief Senior (Chemistry) is responsible for assuring that all procedures and protocols are conducted according to the approved Laboratory Quality Assurance Program, the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) guidelines ISO/IEC (International Organization for Standardization/International Electrotechnical Commission) 17025 requirements, and other accreditation bodies. The position provides strategic direction, management, and oversight for component programs and projects, program and grant budgets, workload review, quality assurance, and laboratory safety. This position is responsible for the recruiting, management, and career development of all program staff, including subordinate supervisors. This position may also act as, or delegate, the role of Laboratory Technical Supervisor, if qualified to do so under CLIA.

Job Duties

Organize, plan, and direct all activities within the Office of Chemistry. Ensure effective coordination between the individual sections as well as effective integration with other ADHS programs, state and federal agencies, working groups, and universities. Monitor and report on all aspects of program quality assurance, quality control, and performance.

Work closely with the Laboratory Business Manager, who is responsible for the oversight of all business functions for the Office of Chemistry, to develop and monitor annual budgets, and approve allocations and purchases.

Maintain technical competency through the review of scientific and technical journals and maintenance of required Chemistry method competencies.

Plan and evaluate personnel performance, including evaluations and hiring.

Other duties as assigned as related to the position.

Selective Preference(s)

Bachelor's Degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or related laboratory science field and five years of professional experience and experience

with supervisory or management responsibilities. A Master's degree in a related field may substitute for two years of related experience.

Experience in working in the field of clinical or environmental testing is preferred. A candidate is eligible as a technical supervisor must meet the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CUA) minimum requirements for the performance of high complexity testing as defined in the CUA regulations subpart D6171 493.1489(b) (2)(i). Retirement

To help you build a financially secure future, the State makes monthly contributions to finance your retirement benefit. The State will contribute to the ASRS in an amount equal to your contribution. In other words, you and the State will each pay 50% of the total cost of the benefit. New State employees have a 27-week wait period for contributions to begin.
