Animal Care Technician
General job expectations: Animal Care Technician should have knowledge and experience working in the animal welfare business to understand how a shelter functions. They should be able to provide care to a dog, perform cleaning tasks as needed and put the dog at ease as they live in the shelter. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with customers, volunteers, board members, leadership and co-workers and potential adopters.
The Animal Care Tech will have knowledge in adoption policies as outlined by AZSDR and will contribute to match making our dogs with their perfect home. Must be able to be on their feet for extended periods of time. Be able to bend and lift 50 lbs safely.
Major duties and responsibilities:
· Promote the mission of the rescue
· Be on time to all scheduled shifts
· Monitor and care for all dogs located at the AZSDR shelter location including providing food and water, clean blankets/beds, taking dogs out to use the bathroom, etc.
· Providing every dog time out of their kennels (double deckers, groom room, intake, isolation, etc.) to stretch, walk around, and burn some energy (in addition to potty break). This must happen at least once during the opening shift and at least twice during the closing shift.
· Ensure each dog is comfortable while in the care of AZSDR which includes providing clean bedding and blankets at all times (at the start/end of each shift and throughout the day as needed)
· Administer medication to dogs as directed by management
· Report any signs of illness in a dog or changes in a dog’s behavior to management immediately
· Clean and sanitize the shelter including dog rooms, all kennels/double-deckers, groom room, meet and greet room, lobby, patio, play yards, parking lot, etc.
· Re-stocking supplies for the next shift as needed.
· Perform other duties around the shelter as time permits such as cleaning, organizing, bathing dogs, etc.
· Help other team members when your duties are completed to ensure everyone is on track for the day.
Qualifications for the position: The ideal candidate should be able to thrive in a fast-paced environment and be able to multi-task. Applicant must have a passion for animal welfare, be highly organized, and understand the value of positive customer service.
Required Skills/Education
· 1 year of shelter/rescue/animal care experience
· 1 year customer service experience
· High school diploma or GED
Desired Skills/Education
3 years’ experience in shelter/rescue/animal care
